MASKS & OTHER TRANSFORMATIONS

These assemblies represent a small portion of my larger Sign Language collection. Each piece is composed of multiple 2″ squares cut from recycled traffic signs. The constructive process allows a scrambling and re-ordering of the original sign’s message and purpose.

The Masks, like the construction of crossword puzzles slowly uncover a variety of characters and personalities. Some Masks are serious, others funny or sad. One uncovered that weasel-faced man from my re-occurring nightmare.

The Five x Five’s are purely abstractions, yet as abstractions they offer many possible stories and interpretations. At their core is the ‘RE’ story—Re-claim, Re-cycle, Re-interpret,
Re-examine, and Re-store.
