West Seattle Art Walk, Thursday May 9 2013, 6-9pm

This months art show features West Seattle Highschool students. One of which – Juliana Tomei’s photograph received $2,500.00 at the Double Exposure auction to raise money for the Youth in Focus Photography program on April 27th.

WSHS Student Artist Juliana Tomei: “I was raised on a diet of punk music and sunshine. I’m a California Valley native turned coffee-drinking, rain-loving Seattle-ite. The first time I picked up a camera I caught a fever and I have yet to sweat it out. When social anxiety gets the best of me, my camera is my mask. The wheels of my imagination are dark and twisted but this bike keeps rolling.

Also showing is artist Isabella Fernadez: Her words “The reduction block printing process was repetitive and tedious, testing both my patience and perfectionism. At first it was fun carving the linoleum stamp, but after the 4th layer I felt like flipping a table. It drove me crazy getting the printing ink onto the roller and trying to align each reduction print onto the previous print. Ripping my block in half crossed my mind many times, but with each print there was practice, and a lesson on being resilient for art. My slow descent to insanity taught me about the art of reduction block printing and that no matter how frustrating the work is, the result is worth it.”

West Seattle art teachers: Michelle Sloan and Taryn Piller are both art teachers at West Seattle High School. Michelle teaches drawing, painting, and photography. Taryn Piller teaches ceramics. Each share a passion for educating and introducing students to new techniques and processes to create and express themselves in the Arts.

Heartland Cafe is located at 4210 SW Admiral Way.
