Artist statement:
Denise’s paintings emerge from a fundamental love of color. Her discovery lies in its emotive quality and the play of one color off another. Shape, line and space figure prominently as well, creating abstract yet familiar environments. Her work invites the viewer to step into a world of emotion, allowing for personal interpretation and association to emerge organically. Denise’s process is driven yet open, a balance between an urge to express, while allowing the paintings to find her. Her paintings are often created over a period of time, applying multiple layers of oil paint and scraping off layers, to allow a depth of color to surface and contribute to the textural quality of each piece. Energy and movement are also palpable in Denise’s work, influenced by her experience in theater and dance. Her desire is to speak to something soulful, yet childlike, connecting viewers to the subconscious and inviting them to roam within the worlds she unearths.
