Karen Gjelsteen is a mixed media artist, a theatre scenic designer and an educator.
Her mixed media art is heavily influenced by her career as a set designer. Her theatre experiences bring a dramatic boldness and theatricality to her work, which often explores themes of ethereal memory.
Over the last couple of years she created several series of paintings and mixed media work that was shown during the summer of 2015 at the Mt. Baker Neighborhood Center for the Arts in a solo exhibition entitled, “Healing and Recovery, a Celebration”, a nearly sold-out showcase that ran from July into September of 2015.
Karen Gjelsteen has designed more than 140 theatrical productions regionally and nationally. Her theatre set designs have appeared from Seattle to Atlanta, from Berkeley to Portland, and from Honolulu to Anchorage. In 2007 she received the Gregory Falls Sustained Achievement Award for her contributions to the Seattle theatre community.
Her career as an educator at Seattle’s Cornish College of the Arts spanned three decades. She was a founding visionary of the Performance Production Department, where as full professor, she mentored scenic designers and theatre artisans. Recently she retired from Cornish.

We are excited to be a part of the West Seattle Art Walk and on this night we will be featuring two local artists:
Sarah Barrick is a West Seattle based artist and photographer who creates mandalas with small slices of her nature photography; transforming one small moment in time into an expression of the connection between all souls and their bond to mother nature. Her mandalas act as journal entries, marking different points in her life as an artist. She also creates one of a kind mandalas using an image that has sentimental value for her customer. Her art is meant to inspire moments of pause in a world where we all move too fast. She aims to bring the viewer back into the present moment where they can appreciate their own unique perspective on her nature inspired designs. Sarah offers mandala jewelry, accessories and art for the home and garden.
Tami Bensen is a abstract expressionist who works in painting and sculpture. Her inquisitive mind places such a bright perspective on anything she touches. Tami practices intuitive art as a life style. The process of letting go of self judgment, to truly trust yourself. She currently lives in West Seattle and is teaching intuitive art at the Alki bathouse. In 2015 Tami was featured in the 30th Annual Artist Trust auction at Fischer Pavilion in Seattle Center 2015.
Abundance Pots are hand made by Tami filled with succulents which effortlessly reproduce with an abundance. Write your intention on the scroll and plant it along side the succulent. Give them love in the present moment and watch them grow. Abundance pots are pure possibility waiting to happen!
Inner Space Healing Center: Northwest Light III Works by Joel Heflin
Artist Statement:
I was invited by Jenny Wilson Counseling and Consulting to create a series of paintings and furniture pieces that included a therapeutic element somewhere in the creative process. This could be the resolution of a memory, event, or the process of overcoming a hurdle as I worked through my subject matter and materials.
My landscape based paintings focus on the often grey, drab, cloudy Northwestern sky and attempted to find positive values in contrasting grey and yellows; earthy tones that convey a rich texture and variety of contrasts as opposed to the ‘hedge stone grey’ cloudy days. The therapeutic element hinted at by the curator enabled a more rich and varied observation of natural light and surroundings in the PNW.
The furniture pieces were created through the cabinetry program at the Wood Technology Center. While learning process of architectural woodworking I weighed the opposing goals of mechanical perfection and personal aesthetics that could potential inform my character or personality as an artist or craftsperson. In other words, the question of how a new vernacular and set of skills would change my aesthetic choices and moral outlook became part of my artistic process.
The work in this exhibit represents a multi-disciplinary approach to the artists’ process of observation and creation that incorporates personal narratives between the mediums of painting and furniture making. Special thanks to Jenny Wilson Counseling and Consulting, Interspace Healing Center and the West Seattle Art Walk for this opportunity.
