Pamela Hemmerling INDOORS+RECEPTION 5pm-8pm
Becoming an artist later in life and without formal training, I have found that the creative journey surprises and brings joy in unexpected ways. I primarily paint figures, portraits, and abstracts using acrylic paint but rarely start on a smooth canvas. To build up layers and texture I use vintage book paper, fabric, and other ephemera. Living in West Seattle for the past 25 years I continue to be inspired by the ordinary beauty found in each day. Through this current series of female figures and portraits, I hope to touch the viewer in a meaningful way, forming a connection by sharing a compelling narrative of vulnerability and strength.

As a bonus, the Admiral Neighborhood Association has scheduled an After Art Walk Happy Hour the same night as Muse Fest, beginning at 8 pm at West Seattle Grounds, one of the Muse Fest venues. Join in to connect with neighbors and local businesses!

Karen Johnson WINDOW SHOW + BUSINESS HOURS ONLY 11am-6pm
I’m fascinated by the transparency of water. This show is entirely focused on sealife, one of my many obsessions, since I often spend my summers living on a boat. Here in Seattle, we’re a coastal community surrounded by water full of amazing things, if you look for them. I hope that by drawing attention to these other forms of life, I can remind people to be aware of this precious resource. My current work is all created on an iPad Pro, mostly just using a finger or two directly on the screen, sometimes using a stylus for detail work. My graphic design background is evident in my art — I thrive on colors, shapes, patterns and textures. Fluid strokes and a sense of movement are the basis for my style.
Notecards of my work will be available. I am also showing at Mailbox West in the Morgan Junction.

Art for the Tender
In creating my pieces it is my goal to convey compassion and growth through tenderness. I am constantly inspired by nature and its connection to the human form. I’ve visited many mediums beginning with charcoal and graphite, and then moving on to acrylic, watercolor, and ink. In the past year, I’ve dived into more manual work such as linocuts and stamps, focusing on digital illustration.

Deb McCarroll BUSINESS HOURS ONLY (Permanent collection)
Deb McCarroll’s bold work embodies the Northwest’s regional culture. Patterns are created with Seattle’s ubiquitous falling rain. Paper is integrated into wet paint and then set on fire. Metal leaf is frequently woven into scenes and selectively oxidized with acid to add patinas in glittering greens and browns. Local flora and fauna are painted in startling realism and then pared with raw abstract practices.

Miha Sarani INDOORS+RECEPTION 5-9pm
Artist Statement
My art practice aims to explore the elements of everyday life. My interest is in framing our existence, voyeuristic responses, and the very idea of duality. I find that playing with the formal elements helps me better visually represent these intentions. This will bring about an exploration of a dialogue with the past while engaging current issue; addressing cyclical occurrences throughout history, but with contemporary challenges. My assertion is to create a juxtaposition of conceptual art and the aesthetic value; thus visually combining what I believe to be the very essence of art. For this reason, reading of my work often includes both arbitrary and conventional signs, personal assumptions mixed with stylistic representation of post-modern content. For inspiration, I look to old masters as well as the new. The theoretical framing of my work is to move it beyond the hyped contemporary referent and trendy aesthetic that pays less attention to content and more to approximation. I believe modern viewers have become accustomed to having art dissected and served to them, which can often devalue the artwork. Although I enjoy contemporary art and admire many of its practitioners, I strive to create something with a deeper significance; a bridge between the ancient rituals and modern viewers.

MEET THE ARTIST:
T. Frick Art – paintings
T. Frick is a self-taught artist and female entrepreneur. She is a licensed Landscape Architect with a Bachelor’s of Science from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Art has always been a key part of T’s life, even as a young child. But it was her training in the architectural field that advanced her drafting, sketching, and painting style. Growing up, T. could be found wandering the backwoods with one of her resident pups or when indoors, she occupied her time with drawing, painting, or other creative hobbies. Her love of nature and the outdoors led to a career in design. When not working, you’ll typically find her creating — colors, shapes, textures, and movement creatively come to mind, manifesting into abstract, typically landscape, visions. T. will tell you she dreams in trees. No painting is ever planned. She begins with freedom of expression and movement, marking making with no preset destination. Sessions in, a painting will begin to reveal itself and navigate towards its intended vision. T. is currently working in oil and cold wax, acrylic, and mixed media in an abstract, expressive style. Her paintings are typically smaller in size with larger works on the horizon. Commissions at any scale are available upon request. Check out T’s website and join her on an artistic journey through her diverse array of artwork!

Gary Rubin – Art in Isolation INDOORS 5:30-7pm
Artist Statement
Entering 2020, my goal was to return to art and commit to creating one drawing a weekend for the year. When the stay-at-home order went into effect in March of that year, I found myself drawing every night and throughout the weekend. It was drawing that has kept me centered and motivated, giving me purpose during isolation. In my isolation, my connection with the outside world has been primarily through the pieces I’ve created. I have selected subjects that inspire me – that evoke an emotion or tap into one of the many feelings I have had, while we all dealt with the challenges of the COVID and racial injustice pandemics. The subjects all lived within the frame of my television. And from these subjects I created compositions, with a sketchbook, set of pencils, and an eraser that all reside on a TV tray.
I never know what the finished product will look like until I stop drawing. And when I stop, it’s because it feels complete and incomplete at the same time. It is not only with what I draw but what I don’t draw, allowing the negative space to complement and oppose the graphite. These selected small works are among the 900+ I created while in isolation over the past two years. I feel so privileged to bring my work out of my home and to share with you. I am honored and humbled to have my first solo exhibition here at Arts West. I am thankful for their ongoing work to steward contemporary visual and performing arts. I hope you find this show a worthy and thought-provoking investment of your time.

Leyendecker were Pat’s heroes from an early age. Returning to Seattle, Pat started a video design and post-production company, Flying Spot, and continued to make art, as time allowed. After 22 years as a business owner, Pat closed Flying Spot and expanded his home studio, splitting his time between painting, video design, and animation. Pat now spends most of his time painting, drawing, and working on home and garden projects. Glenda Weibel
Glenda is a watercolor artist who has lived in West Seattle for over 20 years. She loves the immediacy and fluidity of watercolor, but has recently been exploring ways to free watercolor paintings from being framed behind glass. Several of the pieces in this show are done on archival tissue paper and mounted on a canvas and finished with varnish. This technique maintains the freshness of watercolor, yet sets it free from glass. She also enjoys using traditional watercolor paper and some of those are also in the show.

Laurel Donkervoet is a Washington native, born and raised in Puyallup.
