Billy Ball INDOORS AND RECEPTION 5pm – 8pm

Just a dude with a camera. My underwater photography began while working as a dive guide
and instructor on the Big Island of Hawaii. After a flood of my compact camera housing I made the jump to a DSLR system. With a few mentors and a ton of online research I began to develop my style. Beginning with a trip to Bali, I realized my love of shooting macro critters. I am able to draw on my experience as a dive guide/spotter to help me find my subjects. Over time my interests have expanded into CFWA (Close Focused Wide Angle) and large animals. My passion for teaching people to dive has evolved into a passion to teach underwater photography. I believe very strong fundamental diving skills go hand in hand with photography. By working on both types of skills simultaneously my students are able to evolve their photography rapidly and reduce their impact on the underwater world.

My recent works are intuitive abstract paintings that start with random marks and shapes.  I have no preconceived idea about what I am going to paint.  I add and remove marks and shapes to build up interesting layers and relationships.  The process is then repeated multiple times to give the painting some history.

Deb McCarroll BUSINESS HOURS ONLY (Permanent collection)

Deb McCarroll’s bold work embodies the Northwest’s regional culture. Patterns are created with Seattle’s ubiquitous falling rain. Paper is integrated into wet paint and then set on fire. Metal leaf is frequently woven into scenes and selectively oxidized with acid to add patinas in glittering greens and browns. Local flora and fauna are painted in startling realism and then pared with raw abstract practices.

Tony Cable INDOORS + RECEPTION 4pm-8pm

These paintings are a story of my friend the earth, the mountains the sea the flora the fauna the birds the bees everything that hums and vibrates with resonance to my soul. I’m hoping these works give you a sense of being able to walk into these enchanted environments, and bring about the same compassion and care that I feel towards the natural world.  All I want to do in life is be outside and connect with the natural world, living at the speed of a human being. Painting gives me a window into this opportunity, there’s no better way for me to really digest these enchanted spaces than with art. My direction is to share these spaces and these magical moments in time that happen all around us, at all times, with as many people as possible to cultivate a deep respect for the natural world and it’s preservation. Nature, be it in the pristine protected environments or just a local park, or greenbelt around a neighborhood, places like this have literally saved my life in more ways than one, so I’m hoping to evoke some form of therapy through my painting. Because spending time in nature is healing on so many levels. Have a nice day, and happy earth day, because every day is earth day.

Stacey Sterling INDOORS+RECEPTION 5pm-8pm

Fabrics for Life

Painting about the Ocean is my passion. Teaching about the problems in the environment through art is my mission. You can often see me painting outdoors either at the beach or at community events. My latest project was painting a 4’x8’ mural with the community at the West Seattle Summer Festival. Until now I have not talked much publicly about my Breast Cancer journey. I didn’t want this diagnosis to define who I am. I am a painter, mother, friend, and family member and I am also a cancer survivor. Since I have been asked to participate at the Discovery Shop, I have taken the opportunity to say; cancer sucks! but, you are not alone. No one should be alone on this journey. I gained knowledge and strength through close contacts and strangers. There are many organizations and people with experience that can make the scary diagnosis palatable. One great resource is The American Cancer Society which has invested in cancer research since 1946. It makes sense to give to an organization that does so much to help cancer patients. For this one night only show, I will be donating a percentage of proceeds to The American Cancer Society. You will have the opportunity to see my latest wearable/frameable fabric Art and have profits from your purchase go to a good cause.

Barry Johnson INDOORS 4pm-7pm. Business hour display only.

Sumthin’ Sumthin’

Seattle-based artist Barry Johnson works explore a deep investment in his cultural heritage. His work was created to combat the overarching absence and erasure of Black figures throughout time. Noting how canonical Western history has obscured and annulled Black history, Johnson’s work echoes this deletion only to reclaim that very same space. Johnson’s portraiture series displays a unique range of techniques. Elements of collage, stoic faces and partially obstructed figures are emblazoned by bold strokes, shapes, and colors that imbue each of his characters with zeal and strength. The duality between the sober expressions of the figures and the vivacity of the canvases is the artist’s pointed reminder to the audience that the contributions of artists of color are vast and yet rarely acknowledged. Johnson addresses this inequality and he and his figures alike demand better. As tangible, personal investments to right a flawed narrative, each of the works presented evoke their own energetic tenor and comment on the mental trauma in dealing with the effects of an ever intolerant and racist society. Johnson has received the Edwin T. Pratt Award, smART Ventures award, GAP Award, and was a finalist for the Conductive Garboil Grant, Neddy Award and Seattle Art Museum’s Betty Bowen Award. Johnson’s work has been shown and collected throughout the nation. He’s also created multiple permanent artworks regionally, including an immersive mural for Facebook’s Bellevue Office during his Open Arts Residency with them and a large-scale permanent fabrication and sculpture for the Midtown development in Seattle, WA.

Tom Costantini INDOOR SHOW+RECEPTION 5pm-8pm

I love the neighborhood environs here in West Seattle, and value the relationships I’ve built with neighbors, merchants and other local artists. I’ve always been fascinated by cars and buildings, both as objects of design and as vessels for our collective history and memories. My paintings attempt to capture their souls and tell stories of the places they’ve held in our lives. I approach them with a playful sense of humor, and always strive to offset the subjects with compelling patterns and backgrounds.  I think my years of architectural drafting find an echo in the detailed linework and graphic lettering in the paintings. Recently I’ve been experimenting in a more three-dimensional direction by doing shadowboxes combining paintings with vintage toys and other recycled objects.

Nick Riesland BUSINESS HOUR DISPLAY ONLY 3pm-11pm.

Please note: Artist is not able to attend.

In our time, the inundation of digital images is extraordinary. Yet perhaps surprisingly, people remain captivated by works using traditional media, such as painting and sculpture, and continue crowding museums to experience their marvelous power. Painting, for me, transforms that which it seeks to captivate, thereby promising to bring a new experience to the viewer, even inviting participation. I like to hope that this process, and what I bring forth through working it out, will hook the eye and engage the psyche. I feel extremely fortunate to engage in this transformation, whether painting from life, from photos, or from pure imagination, across an undulating range of subjects.

Release and Restore Solo Exhibition by XIN XIN
September 1st – 30th
This series is about finding our authentic self. By releasing emotions, thoughts and events that no longer serve us, we can then restore inner calmness. I created a series of maps filled with pockets of love and loss in our lives. In the uncomfortable spaces, these repetitive marks represent growth (steps) and grief (tears). Life is full of chapters closing, opening, and re-opening. We go through the white spaces of reflection and the dynamic path of the growing pains. With a variety of color, movement, and emotion I lay out our stories. But not everyone gets to hear these stories. I encourage viewers to step close and away from the works. From a distance the works almost become invisible. From afar, everyone’s life looks almost perfect. In reality, we are all struggling in silence. I want to create a comforting feeling that you are not alone. I hope you find a moment of comfort and joy with this show!

“My latest body of work explores the intentional disintegration and abstraction of a still life scene, eliciting a feeling of beginning a profound sense of nourishment and newness. The warm cradle of a burgeoning kaleidoscopic natural environment evokes calm but reminds the viewer of times rapidity and the constant annihilation cycle of the natural world. WE see the energy of the paint as moving object and hold onto it for a moment before the decay.” – Liz Moody

Seattle based artist, Liz Moody, has been honing her skills in painting for over 20 years. Originally a Minnesota native, she’s made the Pacific Northwest her home since 2007. You can usually find her riding her bike all over the city or doing doing sun salutations at roof top yoga. Although she loves the outdoors; camping and all things nature, her favorite weekend activity is antique shopping and thrift-store “picking” for her vintage clothing business (@babydeervintage).

Kevin Ducoing INDOOR SHOW 5:30pm-8pm

It’s a pleasure to meet you. I am Kevin Ducoing, or just Kev (as in ‘Art of Kev’). Living in the ‘island town’ of West Seattle has given me the opportunity to unplug from city life just by being in my neighborhood. This allows me to concentrate on making art. Lately, I’ve been concentrating on the trees in our neighborhood, and how trees — even a single tree—  transforms a neighborhood into something quite different. Urban trees absorb noise, make shade and homes for a wide variety of animals. Attempting to capture this aesthetic in my art is a continuing adventure. I invite you to enjoy my work!
If you like a painting, I offer custom payment plans. If you would like a print instead, please contact me! I am also available for commission if you would like me to paint something special for you!

Rodolfo Rios Garza INDOORS + RECEPTION 5pm-9pm

I am mostly self-taught but early on benefitted from the mentoring of the late renowned Southwest artist Mel Casas, and from Peruvian artist, Francisco Grippa. I get my inspiration from my surroundings, both natural and man-made, photographs, music and from images in my dreams. This exhibit focuses on trees. Trees are such an endless source of inspiration for me. Trees speak to me in many ways. In them I see energy, love, sadness, and so much more. Their texture lends itself to detailed expression while their limbs can denote a range of moods and resurrect memories. As is my practice, I also include new pieces outside of the show’s main theme as a means of hinting at where my mind wonders and where that wondering might lead me creatively.

Theme of the show is “Trees”, with original acrylic paintings and a few prints on canvas.

About the Artist Please note: artist will not be present as exhibit is business hours only.

Glenda Weibel

Glenda is a watercolor artist who has lived in West Seattle for over 20 years. She loves the immediacy and fluidity of watercolor, but has recently been exploring ways to free watercolor paintings from being framed behind glass. Several of the pieces in this show are done on archival tissue paper and mounted on a canvas and finished with varnish. This technique maintains the freshness of watercolor, yet sets it free from glass. She also enjoys using traditional watercolor paper and some of those are also in the show.
