Izaya Colson INDOORS SHOW + RECEPTION 5pm – 8pm

Visit Lily’s not just for their wonderful cuisine but to see their large wall mural depicting the city of Guazapa where the owner, Lily, grew up. Below is the description of the art murals:

The inspiration for this painting was to replicate a peaceful, small city in El Salvador, called “GUAZAPA”. Lily, owner of “LILY’S SALVADOREAN RESTAURANT”, was raised in Guazapa before moving to USA in 2004 and then to Seattle in 2007. One of the first and most important things to notice is the woman in the lead. She is wearing a blue and white dress to represent the El Salvador flag. In the center of the painting is the lifeline river “RIO GUAZAPA”. A river like this is where Lily’s family would wash clothes and bathe. The yellow flowers in each corner of the painting are the national flower, called “FLOR DE IZOTE”. Unlike flowers which face up, these face down, almost as if they are relaxing. They vary in color from vibrant yellow to soft off white. One the far right, you will see the national bird El Salvador, called “TOROGOZ”. Lily recalls how the birds would sometimes peck at her window, which she found humorous. She felt a friendly connection the the birds, as if they were very aware of each other’s presence.

Look closely at the mountain in the background, you might see the “sleeping lady”. This mountain view is only visible from some angles. When the civil war started in 1979, the fighting was fierce in Suchitoto on the other side of the mountain. Many people fled Suchitoto for the safety of Guazapa.

The painting took ten full days of hard work to realize, from building the frames, painting and installation. Izaya’s intention is for the viewer to feel as if they are stepping into Lily’s world, to experience where she’s from and the things that made her happy. This captures the place where Lily learned about herself and shaped how she relates to the community, family, food, and her culture.

Matthew D Hoover INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5pm-8pm

Native to the Pacific Northwest, Matthew D Hoover is influenced by a great appreciation for the outdoors as seen throughout his paintings.  Those who have followed his photography work over the decades understand how a switch to painting was a fluent transition. Often described as an impressionistic style, with few exceptions brush strokes resemble a dab rather than a stroke.  Dab-Dab here.  Dab-dab there.  Flowing dab-dab sky lines.  Uniquely styled, colors are often mixed on the canvas while work is in progress, rather than premixing on a pallet.  Colors to loosely blend together into the final piece adding extra richness to each textured brush dab. Mimicking daily perspectives, what one sees from afar is recognizable, while the complexities of details are more evident the closer one stands. The closer you get, the more you see.

Ben Calhoun INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5pm-8pm

A Change in Scenery

Throughout the pandemic and into the “now-times” I’ve changed much of my artistic style to incorporate the landscapes and beauty of the Pacific Northwest into my already existing abstract flow. Landscapes that focus on the changing coasts, bodies of water and skies, flowers that bring bright color to our long grey months, and contrasting lines and movement. These pieces are my love letter to sunshine, the birds and the bees, and the things that grow all around us.

Megan Carroll is a Canadian born artist, currently living in West Seattle with her husband and two children. This is her artist statement: I am a mixed media artist who makes expressive, abstract paintings and soft sculpture. My work is a reflection of my relationship to color and form, with a focus on the way they interact with each other to create an emotive visual experience.
My artworks are created through a process of mark making, layering and experimentation. The result is a minimalist palette that combines colors and bold marks to express emotion and moods, such as calmness, peacefulness, urgency, or anger. I am currently pursuing my Masters of Fine Arts through Emily Carr University with a focus on invisible domestic labour and gender roles

Deb McCarroll BUSINESS HOURS ONLY (Permanent collection)

Deb McCarroll’s bold work embodies the Northwest’s regional culture. Patterns are created with Seattle’s ubiquitous falling rain. Paper is integrated into wet paint and then set on fire. Metal leaf is frequently woven into scenes and selectively oxidized with acid to add patinas in glittering greens and browns. Local flora and fauna are painted in startling realism and then pared with raw abstract practices.

Heidi Gottshall INDOOR SHOW & DISPLAY 5:30pm-8pm

I have had an artist’s heart since I was very young and loved my high school art classes. Yet, it wasn’t until five years ago, after raising three children that I ventured into a continuing education course on colored pencil drawing. After another year receiving instruction in pastels, I decided I primarily prefer colored pencils, while sometimes using pastels and micron pen for light and dark accents. My favorite subjects have sentimental meaning, are taken from nature, or images of local architecture and landscapes. Family and friends tend to comment on my attention to detail; this focus and creativity gives me great joy as I immerse myself in the moment while sketching and drawing. I am grateful to the Author of creativity, and thank Verity Credit Union for the opportunity to share my gifts with others in the community.

Mae and Mr. Our Crows

Mae and Mr. “our Crows” and occasionally their babies are around every part of our day. They seem to know exactly where we are in the house at all times, weirdly. When we are outside they quietly sit on their perch we made for them. Mae loves watching our dog Chappie play and likes to engage with us whenever we are outside. She especially loves when I am making or creating something new, weather it is an art project or just working in the yard she is always right next to me with Mr. usually watching from above. I have learned all their clicks and banter and I usually talk to them daily.  I’m sure the neighbors think… I am a crazy crow lady! These crows are my inspiration for this show. ❤️

Making and creating is something I love to do. My next project is going to be called The faces of Nature. Amazing what you can see on a daily walk.  if I let my mind be free… that’s exactly when I start creating.

Chloe Harris INDOORS SHOW+RECEPTION 5pm-8pm

Chloe is a Seattle based abstract fine artist, originally from just outside Portland, Oregon. She is grateful for a creatively encouraged childhood, dabbling in traditional fine arts, movement, and theatrical arts. Spending most of her adolescent years training as a studio dancer, this has influenced her current creative journey. Taking what she loved about dance training; storytelling through abstract movement, and leaving what she struggled with; the demand for perfection, Chloe now enjoys expression through abstract painting. The freedom of painting a theme through an abstract lens continues to invigorate her work.
As a primarily self-taught artist, Chloe’s process is both therapeutic and an emotional release. She continues to experiment through much trial and error, and imagines her work to continue to change and adapt through new experiences and inspirations. Chloe is passionate about accessibility to art for all, and finds that abstract work allows for She has found much success in spontaneity in using bold visual textures and colors, and continually experimenting. a more inviting and interpretive conversation. She hopes to be able to continue finding ways to bring the arts to everyone in positive and less intimidating ways. In her free time, Chloe enjoys trying new recipes, hanging out with her two cats, and traveling.

Beverley Hill, Stixel Studios INDOORS+RECEPTION 5pm-8pm

I am driven by process, much more than by perfection or consistency. I love tinkering, experimenting and discovering new processes, which is why I chose to get a degree in Industrial Design. My degree launched me into a rewarding, thirty year career of architectural lighting design. In 2016, I retired and set up an art studio in my home. One of my first goals was to learn Adobe Illustrator so I could create designs to fabricate into clothing and housewares. Once I gained that digital proficiency, I produced napkins, coasters, table runners, hats, clothing, bowls, toys, and even prayer flags. But the tinkerer needed a larger outlet so I began creating art in as many different media as I could get my hands on; using any new process I learned about. In the last few years, I have produced works in oils, acrylics, pastels, paper, fabric, clay plaster, airbrush, homemade botanical inks and various printing techniques.  After many years, trying to define my ‘signature look’, I have landed on what should have been apparent to the designer in me from the very beginning: strong graphic statements with bold colors and a bit of whimsy.

Don’t forget Mothers Day. My Modern Collage collection housewares are the perfect gift to please the mothers in your life who love bold colors and whimsical images.

Kevin Ducoing INDOOR DISPLAY 9am-3pm

The work displayed here is a mix of two series I am currently working on. One is an exploration of forests, and our interaction with them. Our houses are a lasting legacy that withstands time much like the forest itself. This series ‘They Came in Peace’ playfully explores a view of us – from the forest’s perspective. The other three in this display are from two series that while similar in their figurative nature, the collection ‘Array’ works with groups of people gathered for common purpose. The singular figure is from the collection ‘Understanding The Rules of Falling’ and features a figure in a moment of realization that they are indeed ‘falling’ into a new moment, and in the process discovering a new facet of themselves. All of the works here are available in original or print form. I am available for commission if you would like me to paint something special for you. Contact me for details on prints of any of my work! Cheers, Kevin Ducoing Email: kevinisthatyou@gmail.com 206 595 6983

Rodger Greene INDOORS SHOW + RECEPTION 4pm-7pm. Business hour display only.

“I think these dozen pieces, most of which done within the past 5 years, cover my recent work. Landscape painting, Islamic architecture, plant structure, fractal geometry are all important influences. And they might all be seen in this small sample. “Louie, Louie” started with a drawing I made of a Baroque table in the Rijksmuseum of all things. My process starts with a spatial concept I want to see as painting/sculpture. Sometimes I need to work in three dimensions using trigonometric projection to get at it – as in the “Platforms” and “Untitled 2017”. Sometimes it can be worked out with a flat contoured space. Sometimes – as in “Untitled 2023” – scale becomes a sculptural element. All of the various components of visual art have to work together to make a structure lucid. In the end they have to be physical embodiments not diagrams. If you want a deeper look into my history and development you can find an illustrated presentation under “Work Bio” on my website; rodgergreene.com. As for their meaning. I think that much of the meaning and value of pure abstraction is in the experience of engaging with it. Meditation practice has shown me its similarity to art-looking practice. A good piece should provide a space where the viewer can hang back a little and observe themselves responding to the piece. Then they should be rewarded with pleasure or excitement or even dread or melancholy. I think that my own work is primarily about the excitement of making connections. The title , “ Stop Lying” refers to the modernist trope about representation being inherently false. Magritte’s writing ‘This is not a Pipe “ ( in French, of course) under his painting of a pipe.”– Rodger Greene, Artist

Mason Heckett INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5pm-8pm

Canna West Seattle and Canna West Culture Shop are pleased to present the works of Mason Heckett for the month of May.  We will be hosting the artist for ArtWalk on May 11.  Please join us!

I am a mixed-media painter based in Seattle, with a diverse background attending Evergreen College, teaching music, and touring as a drummer with Blackbird and Party Mountain. For 15 years, I worked as a chef, but my passion for art eventually led me to pursue a career as a painter. My artwork reflects the world around me, and I am committed to using eco-friendly practices in creating my work. I use Frankensteined printers with reclaimed toners and dies to keep my printing process sustainable. My work has been featured in various settings, from intimate pop-up shows to crowded boardrooms in New York City. As a street artist heavily influenced by world events and politics, I have painted and sold over 560 original pieces in the last three years. My work is appreciated and sought after by a wide variety of art enthusiasts and collectors, including Tobey Maguire and Sean Comb. Most recently in 2022 François Pinault, the French founder of the luxury group Kering and investment holding company Artémis,  added two of my landscape paintings to his world-renowned collection. Collectors are intrigued by the subject matter of my work, and I am proud to use my artwork to promote positive change in society. I believe that art has the power to transform the way we see the world and each other, and I am dedicated to continuing my artistic journey and sharing my work with others.
