Finally! Summer is here. Join us on July 13th as we stroll through our neighborhood businesses to view our amazing musical and visual artists. As always, make sure to stop by our great neighborhood sponsoring eateries for food and drink as you check out the artwork in our neighborhood.
Art will be on display at 40 participating businesses and you can enjoy a wide variety of “Art Walk Specials” at 15 bars, restaurants and cafes (Check out our Facebook post for more info). So grab a Walking Map at any of the participating businesses below to plan your route!

The upcoming July 13 West Seattle Art Walk will feature Art of Music with events in the Admiral District and Alaska Junction! Please see posts for Alki Arts Pop-up Gallery and WEND Jewelry for information on musicians playing this month.
Each musician will be performing family-friendly content for 90 minutes at their Art of Music event, from 6:00 pm to 7:45 pm, with one 15-minute break at the midway point.
Featured Q3 Artist! Congratulations to our second quarter featured artist Debbie Bianchi. The West Seattle Arts’ Council loved the vibrant colors and layering of Northwest images to make a brilliant, cohesive image depicting our West Seattle coastline. Debbie will be showing her art this month at Alki Arts Pop-up Gallery in the Senior Center Annex and at the Southpaw Barbershop in September.

Visit Lily’s not just for their wonderful cuisine but to see their large wall mural depicting the city of Guazapa where the owner, Lily, grew up. Below is the description of the art murals:
The inspiration for this painting was to replicate a peaceful, small city in El Salvador, called “GUAZAPA”. Lily, owner of “LILY’S SALVADOREAN RESTAURANT”, was raised in Guazapa before moving to USA in 2004 and then to Seattle in 2007. One of the first and most important things to notice is the woman in the lead. She is wearing a blue and white dress to represent the El Salvador flag. In the center of the painting is the lifeline river “RIO GUAZAPA”. A river like this is where Lily’s family would wash clothes and bathe. The yellow flowers in each corner of the painting are the national flower, called “FLOR DE IZOTE”. Unlike flowers which face up, these face down, almost as if they are relaxing. They vary in color from vibrant yellow to soft off white. One the far right, you will see the national bird El Salvador, called “TOROGOZ”. Lily recalls how the birds would sometimes peck at her window, which she found humorous. She felt a friendly connection the the birds, as if they were very aware of each other’s presence.
Look closely at the mountain in the background, you might see the “sleeping lady”. This mountain view is only visible from some angles. When the civil war started in 1979, the fighting was fierce in Suchitoto on the other side of the mountain. Many people fled Suchitoto for the safety of Guazapa.
The painting took ten full days of hard work to realize, from building the frames, painting and installation. Izaya’s intention is for the viewer to feel as if they are stepping into Lily’s world, to experience where she’s from and the things that made her happy. This captures the place where Lily learned about herself and shaped how she relates to the community, family, food, and her culture.

Summer Reflection
All of my work is relevant to friction and reflection, so for this show I chose pieces that celebrate prosperity, equality, expansion, variety, and interaction. Viewers can play with their image in the mirrors of my art while simultaneously have a feast for their eyes of color relationships and paint stroke textures. My paperworks offer a dance of movement, color, texture and shadow that plays of sunlight so prevalent during our summers. I am grateful to exhibit my work and share its presence. Linda Kemp Scheiber is a native NW artist that has been showing her pastel and oil paintings in the Puget Sound region since the 1990’s. Her works have been shown in galleries and restaurants her in Seattle and The Gallery of Great Things and Up Country in Hawaii. Madison Churchill is a local artist from Seattle, Washington. She is inspired by the ocean and its inhabitants. A writer, hiker, diver, and painter, she loves using art as a tool to celebrate the sea and the natural world. She frequently uses black ink to do precise linework, but also enjoys painting with oil and watercolor and experimenting with black backgrounds. She can often be found tip-toeing through tidepools, searching for orcas, or freediving through kelp forests in the Salish Sea. She is currently completing her Masters in Marine Biology at Scripps Institute of Oceanography but already deeply missed the Salish Sea.

Cat Brooks, a fresh face in the art scene at 53 years old, is debuting her work as an abstract painter and digital artist here in West Seattle. Born and raised in New York, she didn’t pick up a paint brush until she was in her 40s as a therapeutic exercise after being diagnosed with Endometriosis. Her new series, primarily digital, reflects the journey of a woman living many years in pain with an invisible disease. Using a darker palette and leaving the figures faceless is reflective of feeling unseen and dismissed. Subjects are skewed, a little contorted, or fading into the background, yearning to reclaim visibility and agency.

Shelly loves the feel of and the stories contained in the vintage fabrics and linens. She adds to the story by piecing and slow stitching them together. Shelly lives in West Seattle and prefers her life to be sprinkled with art, sunshine, her two amazing kids, beaches, love, a big dog and laughter. She has taught a variety of art classes to youth and adults.
In addition to Shelly’s beautiful fiber art, we are also excited to host a pop-up with Terri Goodwin of Bright River Studios. She’ll sell her West Seattle made ceramic garden art. If you’re a fan of succulents and and the beauty of the PNW, you’ll want to take home an item for your outdoor space. Live music will be provided by alt-folk indie-pop singer songwriter, Jean Mann. Her vocal prowess, combined with eclectic instrument playing (de-tuned acoustic 6-string and tenor guitars, harmonica and ukulele), results in the homey, intimate feeling of sitting around a kitchen table with close friends.

Deb McCarroll’s bold work embodies the Northwest’s regional culture. Patterns are created with Seattle’s ubiquitous falling rain. Paper is integrated into wet paint and then set on fire. Metal leaf is frequently woven into scenes and selectively oxidized with acid to add patinas in glittering greens and browns. Local flora and fauna are painted in startling realism and then pared with raw abstract practices.

July 13 (Summer Fest Eve) Performer Hopscotch (the songwriting duo of jazz pianist & composer Charlie Hiestand and jazz vocalist & songwriter Jeanie Mishler) @ the Alki Arts Pop Up Gallery (Situated within the Senior Center Annex Pop-Up – located at 4500 California Avenue SW). HOPSCOTCH is the songwriting duo of pianist/composer Charlie Hiestand and singer/songwriter Jeanie Mishler. In the tradition of big bands and influenced by Euro band Pink Martini, this smaller band has written and arranged their own music delivered with a killer horn and rhythm section made up of some great Seattle players. Along with their original swing, latin, and blues tunes, they serve up fresh arrangements of pop songs and jazz standards with a touch of comedy and tap dancing thrown in. Jeanie Mishler is the vocalist, tap dancer, guitar player, one of the song writers, and co-leader of the band Hopscotch. Currently a public school music teacher, she also teaches private voice, has been a contributing writer for the Earshot Jazz Magazine and continues her many writing pursuits. Charlie Hiestand is the pianist, composer, arranger and co-leader of the band Hopscotch. Charlie has produced several albums, scored music for films, worked in musical theater as director of music, also playing bass and piano. These adventures brought a love of charts, architecture, numbers and symbols. I intuitively incorporate these influences into my art practice. From her home studio in Gig Harbor, WA, she works with multiple layers of acrylic paint and mixed media to add texture, color and pattern that expresses an emotional and profound appreciation of life.

Mae and Mr. “our Crows” and occasionally their babies are around every part of our day. They seem to know exactly where we are in the house at all times, weirdly. When we are outside they quietly sit on their perch we made for them. Mae loves watching our dog Chappie play and likes to engage with us whenever we are outside. She especially loves when I am making or creating something new, weather it is an art project or just working in the yard she is always right next to me with Mr. usually watching from above. I have learned all their clicks and banter and I usually talk to them daily. I’m sure the neighbors think… I am a crazy crow lady! These crows are my inspiration for this show. ❤️
Making and creating is something I love to do. My next project is going to be called The faces of Nature. Amazing what you can see on a daily walk. if I let my mind be free… that’s exactly when I start creating.

A Study in Abstracts and Florals
Mixing an abstract background with an impressionist depiction of a floral is a form i having been playing with for a while. Using the play of light/dark and texture, the abstract can draw you into a world, creating shapes and areas, much like a landscaped garden. Whether the abstract is more geometric or has a softer flow, the painting should draw you in; enticing you to go into the shadows, finding that corner to contemplate. By overlaying the florals, the suggestion might come to mind that there are more there in the background. Does our mind create more just be the suggestion and the play of light?

I am a longtime West Seattle resident, former educator, mom of three, traveler, outdoor enthusiast, and an artist who has been finding inspiration in the natural world all of my life. The paintings displayed here are my attempt to honor trees, our source of oxygen, food, shelter, and solace. I use oil + cold wax medium to achieve vibrant dolor, texture, and dimensionality. Cold wax, (unlike encaustic) is a whipped wax medium that is mixed 50-50% with oil paint and applied without heat. In support of the trees, I will be donating 20% of all sales toward carbon credits.
