Food & drink specials during the Art Walk include $2 off any liquor/beverage or a free empanada dessert with purchase and is available 5-8pm.

Izaya Colson INDOORS SHOW + RECEPTION 5pm – 8pm

Visit Lily’s not just for their wonderful cuisine but to see their large wall mural depicting the city of Guazapa where the owner, Lily, grew up. Below is the description of the art murals:

The inspiration for this painting was to replicate a peaceful, small city in El Salvador, called “GUAZAPA”. Lily, owner of “LILY’S SALVADOREAN RESTAURANT”, was raised in Guazapa before moving to USA in 2004 and then to Seattle in 2007. One of the first and most important things to notice is the woman in the lead. She is wearing a blue and white dress to represent the El Salvador flag. In the center of the painting is the lifeline river “RIO GUAZAPA”. A river like this is where Lily’s family would wash clothes and bathe. The yellow flowers in each corner of the painting are the national flower, called “FLOR DE IZOTE”. Unlike flowers which face up, these face down, almost as if they are relaxing. They vary in color from vibrant yellow to soft off white. One the far right, you will see the national bird El Salvador, called “TOROGOZ”. Lily recalls how the birds would sometimes peck at her window, which she found humorous. She felt a friendly connection the the birds, as if they were very aware of each other’s presence.

Look closely at the mountain in the background, you might see the “sleeping lady”. This mountain view is only visible from some angles. When the civil war started in 1979, the fighting was fierce in Suchitoto on the other side of the mountain. Many people fled Suchitoto for the safety of Guazapa.

The painting took ten full days of hard work to realize, from building the frames, painting and installation. Izaya’s intention is for the viewer to feel as if they are stepping into Lily’s world, to experience where she’s from and the things that made her happy. This captures the place where Lily learned about herself and shaped how she relates to the community, family, food, and her culture.

Woods Bramble INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5pm-8pm

Woods Bramble is an American painter and Tattooer residing in Seattle,WA. He is a transplant from Los Angeles but has lived and worked in the northwest for well over a decade, devoting his paintings to the unsung areas of the city. Focusing heavily on buildings and street scenes, including electrical wiring and other ephemera, he is fascinated by the mundane and pedestrian, feeling that these subject matters connect all who live in the city. He has also been a working tattoo artist since 1989 when he apprenticed under Robert Benedetti at Sunset Strip Tattoo. Working around such greats in the industry as Greg James, Rockwood Rick, Tennessee Dave James and Rick Walters. His Painting style is much more loose than the precision needed in tattooing and he has tried to recreate the feeling of the bold brush-work that he saw growing up, at the feet of his grandfather in the small paint studio in their backyard. Formerly owning and running Blue Geisha Tattoo for 9 years, he now works at West Seattle Tattoo with his oldest daughter and lives with his wife and two youngest children.

Cat Brooks INDOORS + RECEPTION 5pm – 8pm

Cat Brooks, a fresh face in the art scene at 53 years old, is debuting her work as an abstract painter and digital artist here in West Seattle. Born and raised in New York, she didn’t pick up a paint brush until she was in her 40s as a therapeutic exercise after being diagnosed with Endometriosis. Her new series, primarily digital, reflects the journey of a woman living many years in pain with an invisible disease. Using a darker palette and leaving the figures faceless is reflective of feeling unseen and dismissed. Subjects are skewed, a little contorted, or fading into the background, yearning to reclaim visibility and agency.

Shelly Sazama INDOOR SHOW& RECEPTION, 5pm-8pm

Shelly Sazama is an everyday maker, learner, and encourager. She loves creativity and constantly challenges herself to better her artistic practice. In her childhood, she would often blissfully get lost in making art. While choosing a career as a healthcare provider, she is still a daily maker. She loves the feel of and the stories contained in the vintage fabrics and linens.  Shelly adds to the story by piecing and slow stitching them together. Inspiration for her slow stitching is often influenced by the wear or imperfect beauty of a fabric.

Stuart Kleiger INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION

Select pieces from the collection, Collateral Discoveries. This body of work is about crossing over the last two years and the unexpected discoveries that were made along the way. Discoveries of ourselves, of others, of sorrow, and of isolation. We also began to see again what we forgot, what we took for granted, and were reminded of what was overlooked. I hope you find in these works shared expressions of what we have endured and moments of gratitude we had among such loss. It is my hope this body of work can create community out of experiences previously held in isolation. We all went through something, let us now “common thread” our burdens, and commune in joy. Let us remember what we found as much as what we wish to forget.

Deb McCarroll BUSINESS HOURS ONLY (Permanent collection)

Deb McCarroll’s bold work embodies the Northwest’s regional culture. Patterns are created with Seattle’s ubiquitous falling rain. Paper is integrated into wet paint and then set on fire. Metal leaf is frequently woven into scenes and selectively oxidized with acid to add patinas in glittering greens and browns. Local flora and fauna are painted in startling realism and then pared with raw abstract practices.

Lisa Sweo Eul INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5pm-8pm

While Lisa Sweo Eul will nor be able to be with us during August Art Walk, SAVE THE DATE!  Sunday, August 27, Lisa will be right outside our front door, painting!  Doesn’t that sound terrific?  Lisa Sweo Eul, CAPERS HOME, and Farmer’s Market.  Three grand events; the perfect trifecta!

As a life-long creative, Lisa Sweo Eul has always noticed the small details, patterns and colors in her daily life. She loves the way barnacles make a striking pattern of dark and light or how the clouds look painted against the various blues in the sky. These details along with a lifetime of sailing, hiking, traveling and living in South East Asia and Europe and 35 years in the investment industry inspire my art.  These adventures brought a love of charts, architecture, numbers and symbols. I intuitively incorporate these influences into my art practice. From her home studio in Gig Harbor, WA, she works with multiple layers of acrylic paint and mixed media to add texture, color and pattern that expresses an emotional and profound appreciation of life.

Denise Currier BUSINESS HOUR DISPLAY ONLY 11am-6:00pm

Mae and Mr. Our Crows

Mae and Mr. “our Crows” and occasionally their babies are around every part of our day. They seem to know exactly where we are in the house at all times, weirdly. When we are outside they quietly sit on their perch we made for them. Mae loves watching our dog Chappie play and likes to engage with us whenever we are outside. She especially loves when I am making or creating something new, weather it is an art project or just working in the yard she is always right next to me with Mr. usually watching from above. I have learned all their clicks and banter and I usually talk to them daily.  I’m sure the neighbors think… I am a crazy crow lady! These crows are my inspiration for this show. ❤️

Making and creating is something I love to do. My next project is going to be called The faces of Nature. Amazing what you can see on a daily walk.  if I let my mind be free… that’s exactly when I start creating.

John Scott Atkins INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5pm-8pm

Works in A Minor

Growing up, I always did my best drawing in math class, had the best conversations when playing ping pong and wrote my best songs while watching TV.  These days I find inspiration while making To-Do lists. I enjoy drifting and drawing with no plan in sight. My palette is whatever is close by. The subjects are skateboarding tigers, tofu, disaffected cafe dwellers, the chilly masses at the market, houseplants etc. Like life, my art can be ridiculous, melancholy, psychedelic, whimsical and repetitive… And fraught with themes of prescriptions to be picked up, playdates to schedule, therapists to meet.  Take a look around, you’ll get what I mean. I also love hanging out with my wife and two kids and making pizza.

Betty Laughlin Indoors Show & Reception 5pm-8pm

Recycle, Reuse, Recreate

Betty Laughlin is the Maker and Founder of Pieced Together Design. She has been creating different pieces for the past 35-plus years (okay, a long time). About six years ago, she discovered vintage auto upholstery fabrics. The fabric she uses comes from one place, Paul’s Auto Upholstery in Seattle’s Roosevelt District. The idea of repurposing these incredible fabrics led her to making collage journals from all the scraps that accumulate no matter how careful you are not to waste. Finding still more scraps, she began making larger collages as framed pieces of art. She is a life-long resident of West Seattle.
