Kate (Flรผckinger) Petty INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5pm-8pm

Kate (Flรผckinger) Petty was born in West Seattle and has lived and worked here for the last twenty years. Kate finds inspiration in our spectacular landscape. Equally profound and interesting to her are our shifting emotional landscapes. She sees paintings as private narratives โ€” a place, moment, memory in time. Her work explores themes of renunciation, movement, intensity, and impermanence, and her compositions join loose brushwork and rich color with an uninhibited physicality. A longtime volunteer supporting women in prison, Kate is currently creating a new program to share the transformative process of painting. Izaya Colson INDOORS SHOW + RECEPTION 5pm – 8pm

Visit Lily’s not just for their wonderful cuisine but to see their large wall mural depicting the city of Guazapa where the owner, Lily, grew up. Below is the description of the art murals:

The inspiration for this painting was to replicate a peaceful, small city in El Salvador, called “GUAZAPA”. Lily, owner of “LILY’S SALVADOREAN RESTAURANT”, was raised in Guazapa before moving to USA in 2004 and then to Seattle in 2007. One of the first and most important things to notice is the woman in the lead. She is wearing a blue and white dress to represent the El Salvador flag. In the center of the painting is the lifeline river “RIO GUAZAPA”. A river like this is where Lily’s family would wash clothes and bathe. The yellow flowers in each corner of the painting are the national flower, called “FLOR DE IZOTE”. Unlike flowers which face up, these face down, almost as if they are relaxing. They vary in color from vibrant yellow to soft off white. One the far right, you will see the national bird El Salvador, called “TOROGOZ”. Lily recalls how the birds would sometimes peck at her window, which she found humorous. She felt a friendly connection the the birds, as if they were very aware of each other’s presence.

Look closely at the mountain in the background, you might see the “sleeping lady”. This mountain view is only visible from some angles. When the civil war started in 1979, the fighting was fierce in Suchitoto on the other side of the mountain. Many people fled Suchitoto for the safety of Guazapa.

The painting took ten full days of hard work to realize, from building the frames, painting and installation. Izaya’s intention is for the viewer to feel as if they are stepping into Lily’s world, to experience where she’s from and the things that made her happy. This captures the place where Lily learned about herself and shaped how she relates to the community, family, food, and her culture.

Suzanne M Uschold INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5pm-8pm

The Pacific Northwest offers endless inspiration for my art with its majestic mountains, towering evergreens, crashing waves, roaring rivers and beautiful wildlife. My husband and I enjoy capturing this beauty with our cameras as we walk around our local parks and gardens or go on scenic drives. I love the challenge of turning a photo into a quilt using a variety of techniques including collage, applique, thread painting and free motion quilting. While some art quilters embellish their work with paint, I prefer to โ€œpaintโ€ my quilts, using only fabric and thread, and the occasional addition of lace or cheesecloth.

Stacey Sterling INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5pm-8pm

I have been painting since I could hold a brush and selling my Art since 1980. My art career started on the Santa Monica boardwalk while attending California State University Northridge. Through these experiences and volunteering for ocean conservation groups, I found my passion to advocate for clean oceans and to protect Sealife. Since 2020, I have been painting entirely about the Salish Sea. I am fortunate to live close enough to the Puget sound to swim and get instant inspiration. I paint seascapes to Sealife. I love translating the colors and images I see from above the water and the colors and Sealife below the water to canvas. With my paintings I hope to trigger a bigger love of the ocean and with this help save the beauty and biodiversity of the Salish Sea and beyond.

Jessica Tulloch INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5pm-8pm (Good Society is open until 10pm)

Bringing together a passion for art and a background in science, Jessica Tulloch’s captivating acrylic pour art seamlessly unites both worlds. After navigating through a challenging period, she discovered solace and inspiration in the realm of fluid painting, a medium that mirrors life’s inherent uncertainty. With a relaxed approach, Jessica finds beauty in the unknown, embracing the unpredictability of each artistic endeavor. Her acrylic pour creations reflect an organic aesthetic shaped by the principles of chemistry and physics. Colors, textures, and flows emerge which mirror the beauty of the natural world, space, and even the intricate details of molecular biology.

This new series of paintings by West Seattle’s own, Carolyn Autenrieth, looks at trees with fascination as if the stance and posture exacted on them with weather and time presents a narrative to be discovered. Her subjects are the trees of Alki and the trees of Twisp.

About Carolyn Autenrieth Her work as a ceramic artist and painter, contemplates the transformative process in the natural world and celebrates the nuance and surprises found in the โ€˜ordinaryโ€™. The work is part of an investigative process of discovering narrative, metaphor, and beauty (sometimes terrible beauty) in her life and the world around her to invite a deeper response.

Cat Brooks INDOORS + RECEPTION 5pm – 8pm

Cat Brooks, a fresh face in the art scene at 53 years old, is debuting her work as an abstract painter and digital artist here in West Seattle. Born and raised in New York, she didnโ€™t pick up a paint brush until she was in her 40s as a therapeutic exercise after being diagnosed with Endometriosis. Her new series, primarily digital, reflects the journey of a woman living many years in pain with an invisible disease. Using a darker palette and leaving the figures faceless is reflective of feeling unseen and dismissed. Subjects are skewed, a little contorted, or fading into the background, yearning to reclaim visibility and agency.

Stuart Kleiger ARTIST OPEN STUDIO 5pm-8pm

Select pieces from the collection, Collateral Discoveries. This body of work is about crossing over the last two years and the unexpected discoveries that were made along the way. Discoveries of ourselves, of others, of sorrow, and of isolation. We also began to see again what we forgot, what we took for granted, and were reminded of what was overlooked. I hope you find in these works shared expressions of what we have endured and moments of gratitude we had among such loss. It is my hope this body of work can create community out of experiences previously held in isolation. We all went through something, let us now โ€œcommon threadโ€ our burdens, and commune in joy. Let us remember what we found as much as what we wish to forget.

Deb McCarrollโ€™s bold work embodies the Northwestโ€™s regional culture. Patterns are created with Seattleโ€™s ubiquitous falling rain. Paper is integrated into wet paint and then set on fire. Metal leaf is frequently woven into scenes and selectively oxidized with acid to add patinas in glittering greens and browns. Local flora and fauna are painted in startling realism and then pared with raw abstract practices.

Matthew Harkleroad INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5pm-8pm

My work is about materials, shapes, edges, colors and textures. It is meant to be experienced and enjoyed in a very direct, visceral way. This is also how I make it. My intention is to reveal more than invent, to allow more than force, to feel more than think. I choose media, techniques and marks that feel honest and natural, building surfaces that appeal to my love of patina, accidents and the aesthetics of layered histories. My joy is in the act of responding– What is needed here? What would make this image hum? Sometimes personal or narrative associations arise from this process. But usually the experience is more like smelling a fragrant rose, with a depth of experience that is valuable enough on its own, free of association. Either way is fine.

Denise Currier BUSINESS HOUR DISPLAY ONLY 11am-6:00pm

Mae and Mr. Our Crows

Mae and Mr. โ€œour Crowsโ€ and occasionally their babies are around every part of our day. They seem to know exactly where we are in the house at all times, weirdly. When we are outside they quietly sit on their perch we made for them. Mae loves watching our dog Chappie play and likes to engage with us whenever we are outside. She especially loves when I am making or creating something new, weather it is an art project or just working in the yard she is always right next to me with Mr. usually watching from above. I have learned all their clicks and banter and I usually talk to them daily.  Iโ€™m sure the neighbors thinkโ€ฆ I am a crazy crow lady! These crows are my inspiration for this show. โค๏ธ

Making and creating is something I love to do. My next project is going to be called The faces of Nature. Amazing what you can see on a daily walk.  if I let my mind be freeโ€ฆ thatโ€™s exactly when I start creating.

Anna Sparks Indoors Show & Reception 5pm-8pm

Anna Sparks is a mixed media artist, designer, photographer, and all-around ‘arranger’ of things. She is also a cancer survivor and uses art as part of her recovery practice and therapy. She combines her love for traveling, visual storytelling, and collecting things with her desire to spread a message and document the changing environment. Her collages reflect aesthetic play and media exploration. In her mixed media pieces, she intuitively approaches the canvas with acrylic paints, combining recycled elements, vintage National Geographic magazines, newspapers, and other found items into abstract compositions or designs. She likes to include aspects of her own photographs, oil pastels, textured paint, and pens in her canvases, panels, or works on paper. Additionally, she uses layers as a means to create texture and depth, lines to evoke emotion, and finds the relation to society and our natural environment always present. As a street and culture photo documentarian, she approaches her subjects with respect, grace, and understanding. Her eye is drawn to lines and colors that create balanced and asymmetrical compositions in the frame. Rarely does she post-edit her photographs as she loves experimenting with analog methods and relishes finding tiny surprises in film, including light leaks and double exposures.

ARTSWEST

Kalina Winska BUSINESS HOUR DISPLAY ONLY 4pm-7pm. The artist will not be in attendance during Artwalk.

Kalina Winska is a Seattle-based artist whose paintings, created on canvas, wood panels, and paper, present speculative landscapes in which the artist blurs reality and representation, the environment and its technological translations, with imagery taken from weather patterns, climate models, and futuristic landscapes. Kalina grew up in Poland and has actively exhibited her works in the US, Poland, Germany, Canada, and Japan. Her recent commissions include a three-dimensional installation for San Juan Island Museum Atrium and large murals for Meta Open Arts and Googleโ€™s Artist in Residence Programs. She has been showing her art with SAM Gallery at the Seattle Art Museum.

Carbon Magic

Inspired by David Sergeantโ€™s poem โ€œA Language of Change,โ€ my works delve into the meaning behind one particular phrase: โ€œtranslated by carbon magic,โ€ exploring the intricate and dramatically changing interplay between human actions and the environmentโ€™s response. I express this powerful transformation through abstraction, inviting viewers to form their more personal reflections. In โ€œCarbon Magic,โ€ each painting becomes a testament to the transformationโ€™s duality. Take meticulously drawn lines and shapes reminiscent of contours taken from weather maps or repeated over and over tiny marks that are actual greenhouse gas formulas forming cloud- or smoke-like shapes. The crisp graphic elements merge with painterly soft surfaces underneath. This interplay mirrors the fragile harmony of our world, where the equilibrium can be disturbed by our own hands. My artworks embody both beauty and caution, much like the poem itself. This exhibit serves as a reminder of our choicesโ€™ repercussions and the whispering winds of change. โ€œCarbon Magicโ€ invites us to reflect on our role as Earthโ€™s stewards, interpreting the effects of transformation that shape the environment, us, and the course of our future.

Engrid Hooper, Painter
Favorite parks have inspired these paintings.  Working the way shapes fit together to feel solid, yet still have movement is what I am exploring with these works.  Painting and being with nature gives the same inspiration. I work in both watercolor and acrylics.  I try to paint every morning, that is the best way to begin the day.

Aimee Harding, Potter
Many teachers over the years have inspired my passion for ceramics. It is an art that I lose myself in. When I am working with clay, the world falls away and I am completely transfixed with creating.  I find joy in bright colors as well as the soothing colors of the sea.  My favorite day is a day spent in my pottery studio.

Dawndra Budd INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5pm-8pm

Unveiling Series

In the mystical realm, the whispers of nature intertwine with the ethereal world.  Dawndra uses her lens as a portal into this world. Dawndraโ€™s work speaks to the bewitching interplay between light and shadow, unveiling hidden truths that reveal the primal energy that courses through the universe. Dawndra seeks to remind the viewer of the enchanting potential in everything in the world that surrounds us, to look beyond the surface, and to seek to find the extraordinary within the ordinary. To reclaim oneโ€™s own mystical connection with the universe. Dawndraโ€™s imagery is a meditation on the interconnectedness of all living beings and the sacredness of every moment.  Feeling the power of nature – seeing the magic it holds on a soul level – is her divine truth. Her work bears witness to the unveiling of the power that lies within each and every woman of the universe.  The magic of nature and the feminine divine is a force to behold.

Ellen Zrimsek INDOORS + RECEPTION 5:30pm-8pm

I am a longtime West Seattle resident, former educator, mom of three, traveler, outdoor enthusiast, and an artist who has been finding inspiration in the natural world all of my life. The paintings displayed here are my attempt to honor trees, our source of oxygen, food, shelter, and solace. I use oil + cold wax medium to achieve vibrant dolor, texture, and dimensionality. Cold wax, (unlike encaustic) is a whipped wax medium that is mixed 50-50% with oil paint and applied without heat. In support of the trees, I will be donating 20% of all sales toward carbon credits.
