The Art Walk is October 12th from 5-8pm (check venues for specific times).

Spooky how quickly this year has gone. It’s almost Halloween! Time to stroll through our neighborhood businesses to view our amazing musical and visual artists before the denizens of the dark stalk the streets at the end of the month. As always, make sure to stop by our great neighborhood sponsoring eateries for food and drink as you check out the artwork in our neighborhood.

Art will be on display at 40 participating businesses and you can enjoy a wide variety of “Art Walk Specials” at 15 bars, restaurants and cafes (Check out our Facebook post for more info). So grab a Walking Map at any of the participating businesses below to plan your route!

This post’s hero artwork is by Siege. His art is showing this month at Windermere West Metro .

Please note: We will be updating the businesses and their artists as the week goes on. Please check back before Second Thursday evening!

Can’t Join on October 12th? Our photography team will be covering some of the receptions and will post photos and a recap in a post on our Facebook and Instagram accounts. Check out the social accounts of your favorite exhibiting business – they may post photos or video, too!

We also want to remind our Art Lovers that this event is powered by our participating artists, businesses, and restaurants. Thank you for all you do to celebrate our vibrant art scene in West Seattle!

T Neinas INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5pm-8pm

I am self taught in the medium of block printing and have figured out many of its processes through trial and error. Each block brings forth a new set of challenges, countless hours are spent thinking about an image, then drawing, redrawing, adding, subtracting, manipulating and this is before I pick up a carving tool.  Sometimes I work for an hour here and there.  Sometimes I carve right through until it is finished.   I am a storyteller and I present a strong narrative in my work. I am drawn to the quirkiness of everyday life and am in touch with my dark nordic side from time to time.  Like a book or a song, my work does not speak to everyone. That is not my intent. For those of you who are intrigued, I want my work to make you laugh, make you smile, and to move or touch you in a way that words cannot. I have taught at many Art Centers over the years and have shown nationally and internationally.

This original and personalized chart art is a representation of a person’s natal chart. The woven tapestry is created in the ratio of the elements (fire, air, earth, water) that are found in a natal chart. It also includes the location of the planets, aspects formed between the planets and a booklet explaining the chart. For those who do not know their exact time of birth, the sun sign art that I create is a woven tapestry with a hand-drawn symbol representing a person’s sun sign.  Comet lamps are a new addition to Elemental Tapestry. They are handmade with wire and string and create a softly lit focal point to any room.

Sebastiano Tecchio INDOORS + RECEPTION 2pm – 8pm

A WALK WITH SIMONE

I’ve been taking photographs for many years. It became a more frequent endeavor around the time my daughter Simone was born. She’s now 10 and is the light in my eyes. She is the main reason that growing older gracefully has become my mission – I want to continue to witness this incredible being take shape, to see who she becomes as she grows up. Since the very beginning, Simone and I established a relationship strongly related to the outdoors. Our walks are a constant form of discovery and exploration. I like to think that we are at our best when we are out and about. In the last year, without any influence on my part, she has started to ask to use my phone as a camera. At first, she was shooting long videos of the geese at the Ballard Locks. More recently, she has become intrigued by abstract photography. She is interested in what I’ve been interested in for many years, and the fact that it comes naturally to her delights me to no end. These photographs were taken in Seattle, on a recent walk we took together. Some are mine some are hers. Yet, they are both ours: they are who we are today, and I like to think they are a reflection of the bond we will share as we walk through life together. I’ve added to the show one more picture. It’s one of the first I took when I moved to the PNW and it’s called Seattle. We hope you like what you see. Sebastiano (& Simone)

Deb McCarroll Permanent Show INDOOR SHOW Business Hours

Deb McCarroll’s bold work embodies the Northwest’s regional culture. Patterns are created with Seattle’s ubiquitous falling rain. Paper is integrated into wet paint and then set on fire. Metal leaf is frequently woven into scenes and selectively oxidized with acid to add patinas in glittering greens and browns. Local flora and fauna are painted in startling realism and then pared with raw abstract practices.

Magdalena Cooney INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5pm-8pm

Despite being born in Czechoslovakia, during repressive Communist regime, Magdalena Cooney was destined to become a painter. Growing up in a children’s puppet theatre, her parents provided a magical cocoon, creating an alternate world marked by whimsy, fantasy and larger-than-life characters. Self-taught Cooney credits her parents and their artist friends as her first and most important teachers. Her father, a set designer and puppet maker, and her mother, a graphic designer, influenced Cooney’s ability to create amidst a culture of censorship. The theatre was always her “happy place,” and she believes it is the reason her paintings lean towards the evocative, non-objective rather than specific. She loves working in series where she has the ability to try different techniques and color palette going from a textured one full of bright colors to a smooth one in neutral colors. But one thing remains constant in all of Cooney’s work and that is her subject matter which is nature in an abstract form. In some of her pieces her mountains and sea are more realistic than others, but they can be seen in even the most abstract pieces of her work. Not interested in shock value, Cooney says her paintings feel like home, a place in your heart that is precious and where you feel most like yourself. She lives in West Seattle with her husband and two children and is represented by Gray Sky Gallery in downtown Seattle.

Melanie Brauner and Evan Hilsenberg-Riley INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5pm-8pm

Melanie Brauner is a metalsmith, papermaker, and artist. She holds a BFA from Oregon College of Art & Craft, where she studied books arts and metals. Her papermaking and metals studios are in Everett, Washington, tucked at the back of the garden of her 1928 storybook cottage, where she lives with my bagpipe teacher husband, Kevin, and big orange cat named Higgins.

The focus of Evan’s work is translating the rejuvenating impact of nature and expansive skies onto canvas. She continually studies the manner in which color and shadows shift throughout the day and those insights inform both her technique and palette. She works primarily in acrylic, finding infinite inspiration in undulating storm clouds over the Sound and meandering, sun-dappled trails.

COMPASS REAL ESTATE

4531 CALIFORNIA AVE SW

Compass Real Estate welcomes our Featured Q4 Artist, Maggie Sharar!

Maggie Sharar INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5pm-8pm

A channel to the divine. A mother. A creator. This is Maggie Sharar. Her watercolor paintings illustrate lost and found souls. They invite you into a healing journey. A woman’s truth. Her feminine portraits and forms embody sovereignty and the potent experience of being human. Each piece holds the energy of love, magic, healing, and connection. But most of all Maggie’s work is a kinetic way to create and release energy. Maggie’s creative journey began long ago in the land of sand and sun. Florida. There she grew up on the nature coast soaking in the sights and sounds of cicadas, alligators, moccasins, and manatees. She attended Savannah College of Art and design in 2004. In 2007 the artist found herself in the Orlando area, there she got her feet wet showing in over 20 exhibitions with a series called The Birds. In 2010 the artist slowed down creatively and turned towards motherhood. When Maggie’s daughter was 6 months old her young family made their way west to Seattle. In 2017 her world shifted when she became a single Mother of two children and began her road to recovery from years of abuse. It was then she poured her heart back into her paintings. These works illuminate a lust to let go. To leave the physical body and find the roots of the subconscious. And then, to come home to the body and heal. Presently Maggie is selling her art work full time and thriving. She is also teaching both technical watercolor classes, energetic healing watercolor classes, and private fine art sip and paint parties.

ARTSWEST

Kalina Winska BUSINESS HOUR DISPLAY ONLY 4pm-7pm. The artist will not be in attendance during Artwalk.

Kalina Winska is a Seattle-based artist whose paintings, created on canvas, wood panels, and paper, present speculative landscapes in which the artist blurs reality and representation, the environment and its technological translations, with imagery taken from weather patterns, climate models, and futuristic landscapes. Kalina grew up in Poland and has actively exhibited her works in the US, Poland, Germany, Canada, and Japan. Her recent commissions include a three-dimensional installation for San Juan Island Museum Atrium and large murals for Meta Open Arts and Google’s Artist in Residence Programs. She has been showing her art with SAM Gallery at the Seattle Art Museum.

Carbon Magic

Inspired by David Sergeant’s poem “A Language of Change,” my works delve into the meaning behind one particular phrase: “translated by carbon magic,” exploring the intricate and dramatically changing interplay between human actions and the environment’s response. I express this powerful transformation through abstraction, inviting viewers to form their more personal reflections. In “Carbon Magic,” each painting becomes a testament to the transformation’s duality. Take meticulously drawn lines and shapes reminiscent of contours taken from weather maps or repeated over and over tiny marks that are actual greenhouse gas formulas forming cloud- or smoke-like shapes. The crisp graphic elements merge with painterly soft surfaces underneath. This interplay mirrors the fragile harmony of our world, where the equilibrium can be disturbed by our own hands. My artworks embody both beauty and caution, much like the poem itself. This exhibit serves as a reminder of our choices’ repercussions and the whispering winds of change. “Carbon Magic” invites us to reflect on our role as Earth’s stewards, interpreting the effects of transformation that shape the environment, us, and the course of our future.

Debbi Murray INDOORS + RECEPTION 5:30pm-8pm

Debbi’s current series was born out of the isolation and smallness of life during the pandemic. Working with a theme of controlled chaos and a riotous neon palette, she realized she was simply painting what she needed to get through the darkness of those times. A corner of control within the chaos. These very opposites are reflected in the dialog between the light and the dark. The neon color contrasting sharply within this conversation. Debbi’s work explores the space where vibrant delights dance with our inner shadows. Happy colors lurk, evoking emotional struggle—a paradox on canvas. A former graphic designer with a passion for the unexpected, Debbi finds that structure elevates whimsy. Acrylics, markings, and collage elements combine to form layers and texture, creating a rich outer landscape for the expression of inner ideas. Debbi lives and creates in West Seattle, often accompanied by her twin shadow cats, Dexter and Pepper.

BLOOM
