Art of Music @ November Art Walk

The upcoming November 9 West Seattle Art Walk will feature Art of Music with events in the Admiral District and Alaska Junction!

November 9 Performer Caitlin Patterson, accompanied by Marshell Lombard @ West Seattle Realty in the Admiral District. Caitlin is a native Seattleite, music teacher, and singer-songwriter. She weaves themes from her personal life into melody, usually over guitar or piano. Some of her musical influences include Brandi Carlile, Joni Mitchell, and Rachel Price of the band โ€œLake Street Diveโ€. She has loved to write and sing since she can remember, and specifically enjoys crafting lyrics for her music. Lyrical themes include perseverance, patience, encouragement, and seeking peace. Her voice is sweet, rich, and soulful, and she loves singing in harmony when she can recruit other singers to join her on stage. In addition to songwriting, Caitlin is a local choir teacher at Madison Middle School, as well as a private piano, voice, and guitar teacher. She loves helping her students grow holistically as musicians and as people! Click here to view Caitlin Pattersonโ€™s flyer.

Marshell Lombard, known as Bard on stage, has released several tracks that made the top 10 on all major South African radio station charts. He has a degree in voice and is now pursuing his doctorate degree in music at the University of Washington. He conducts several choirs and writes music. Follow him on IG @bardmustsing for more music.

November 9 Performer Olizar @ John L. Scott Real Estate in the Alaska Junction. Fated and forged by the universe from failed romances, Olizar is a violin and guitar duo based in Seattle, WA.  We specialize in folk-style tunes, and our main influences include Brandi Carlile, Amy Mann, Tori Amos, Alanis Morissette, and Twilight: the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. Effortlessly weaving heart-wrenching harmonies and soaring melodies, our music reflects the journey that never ends. The duo includes Christine Salazar and Caitlin Olive; you can listen to our most recently released single (Saturday Morning) by clicking here. Additionally, Christine has released two solo albums (available on Spotify, Amazon Music, and YouTube, as well as other streaming services) โ€” you can listen to On to Something by clicking here; you can listen to All My Good Intentions by clicking here. Click here to view Olizarโ€™s flyer.

Each musician will be performing family-friendly content for 90 minutes at their Art of Music event, from 6:00 pm to 7:45 pm, with one 15-minute break at the midway point.

Sara Everett INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5pm-8pm

I work within a distinct process of destruction; I cut and tear my own paintings apart. The destroyed painting then becomes the fabric of something new, which I literally mend into sewn collages of endangered animals, plants or landscapes. With canvas or paper, the sutures holding these pieces together have repaired the damage, but the mending is visible. Iโ€™m exploring symbolism around futility in trying to restore habitats already so ruined. A landscape can never be remade as pure as its original state. And yet there is beauty apparent in the mending. I see my work as an expression of hope for putting things right. Continually I try to portray the hope that we can correct our past mistakes and the land will heal. We are all connected through our environs and places we call home.

Pam Hemmerling INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5pm-8pm

Becoming an artist later in life and without formal training, I have found that the creative journey surprises and brings joy in unexpected ways. I primarily paint figures, portraits, and abstracts using acrylic paint but rarely start on a smooth, white canvas. To build up texture I use layers of paint and mixed media collage to create imperfections. I am inspired by the ordinary found in each day especially that which is weathered and old. Through my art, I hope to touch the viewer in a meaningful way, forming a connection by sharing a compelling narrative of vulnerability and strength.

Sindi Somers BUSINESS HOUR DISPLAY ONLY

Sindi is a newer West Seattle resident and absolutely loves it here! She gets excited about color and texture, and enjoys the freedom of playing and discovering in the present moment. Instead of pre-planning, she often begins a piece of work and just keeps going until it seems finished. While studying theatre in college, Sindi discovered how fun it was to drip candle wax on her paintings. This created a unique and interesting texture to her abstract designs. While she continues to enjoy adding various elements and materials to her paintings, Sindiโ€™s newest creations are her โ€œFiesta Squaresโ„ข!โ€ Sizes may vary, but many Fiesta Squaresโ„ข are created on small, 4โ€ x 4โ€ canvases. Why โ€œFiesta?โ€ Because each one is a party, adding a unique burst of color to your wall, shelf, home, office, or car! Car? Sure! Why not?! โ˜บSindi finds making art blissful, and a form of meditation. Sindi hopes that sharing her art with others will help bring them the same joy that creating it brings her. Find out more about Sindi at sindisomers.com, or call or text 360-601-4358.

This will be my first month participating with the West Seattle Art Walk. I’m really excited about my involvement, and am grateful to Zelda Zonk for the opportunity. I will be offering a Zelda Zonk Discount on in-store art purchases through November 30th. Thank you for supporting local artists!

Brittney High INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5pm-7pm

I began my art journey as a form of spiritual awakening and art therapy and in 2020. During both the calm and turbulent eras of my life, I escaped to my artsy world and explored ways to express my emotions, anxieties, hopes, joys, and fears through acrylic pouring and fluid art. The colors that I use in each piece usually correspond to my general mood over a period of time (like feeling “blue”) or a genre of music that I am exploring over a period of time (like psychedelic doom metal). I focus on the meaning behind the colors, moods, and emerging themes in each of the unique paintings in order to better understand my emotional, mental, and spiritual states at the time of painting. Since fluid art is notoriously difficult to control, each piece is a one-of-a-kind interaction between my artistic side and the laws of fluid dynamics. Each piece also taught me to just “Let go and let it flow” both in my artwork and in my daily life. Once I stopped trying to control the process, the artwork began to flow more naturally and I began to express myself more effectively.  I was inspired by a verse in Psalms 62:8: โ€œTrust in Him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before Him: for YHWH is a refuge.โ€ I later incorporated what I call mirror sessions where I imposed symmetry on an original painting using a digital software (check out my Esty account for mirror session prints!). Outside of creating art, I am a graduate student at the University of Washington where I study philosophy. My main areas of interest include philosophy of science, philosophy of physics, and metaphysics of science. To see more of my artwork, check out my Instagram page or my Esty shop. Hope yall enjoy!!

Maggie Sharar, West Seattle Artwalk Featured Quarterly Artist INDOORS + RECEPTION 2pm – 8pm

A channel to the divine. A mother. A creator. This is Maggie Sharar. Her watercolor paintings illustrate lost and found souls. They invite you into a healing journey. A womanโ€™s truth. Her feminine portraits and forms embody sovereignty and the potent experience of being human. Each piece holds the energy of love, magic, healing, and connection. But most of all Maggieโ€™s work is a kinetic way to create and release energy. Maggie’s creative journey began long ago in the land of sand and sun. Florida. There she grew up on the nature coast soaking in the sights and sounds of cicadas, alligators, moccasins, and manatees. She attended Savannah College of Art and design in 2004. In 2007 the artist found herself in the Orlando area, there she got her feet wet showing in over 20 exhibitions with a series called The Birds. In 2010 the artist slowed down creatively and turned towards motherhood. When Maggieโ€™s daughter was 6 months old her young family made their way west to Seattle. In 2017 her world shifted when she became a single Mother of two children and began her road to recovery from years of abuse. It was then she poured her heart back into her paintings. These works illuminate a lust to let go. To leave the physical body and find the roots of the subconscious. And then, to come home to the body and heal. Presently Maggie is selling her art work full time and thriving. She is also teaching both technical watercolor classes, energetic healing watercolor classes, and private fine art sip and paint parties.

After navigating through a challenging period, she discovered solace and inspiration in the realm of fluid painting, a medium that mirrors life’s inherent uncertainty. With a relaxed approach, Jessica finds beauty in the unknown, embracing the unpredictability of each artistic endeavor. Her acrylic pour creations reflect an organic aesthetic shaped by the principles of chemistry and physics. Colors, textures, and flows emerge which mirror the beauty of the natural world, space, and even the intricate details of molecular biology.

Deb McCarroll Permanent Show INDOOR SHOW Business Hours

Deb McCarrollโ€™s bold work embodies the Northwestโ€™s regional culture. Patterns are created with Seattleโ€™s ubiquitous falling rain. Paper is integrated into wet paint and then set on fire. Metal leaf is frequently woven into scenes and selectively oxidized with acid to add patinas in glittering greens and browns. Local flora and fauna are painted in startling realism and then pared with raw abstract practices.

Andy Officer, INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5pm-8pm

l am an artist and photographer living in Columbia City, Seattle. I have been creating photomontage work in some form for about 15 years. I draw most of my inspiration from other collage artists and surrealists such as Hannah Hรถch, Jerry Uelsmann, ManRay, Jesse Treece, Salvador Dali and Max Ernst. My work is very playful and experimental. I spend hours gathering my materials like ingredients and carefully cutting out the parts that feel meaningful.
When I start an art board, the piece seems to create itself while I follow along with what feels right, often using new and old photographs and drawing colorful textures to transport the subject. The resulting images have messages within them like you would see in a strange dream. This process is informed by my own emotion, things that I have trouble putting into words. This current body of work displays everything from feelings of loneliness, relaxation, introspection, class inequality, and the fear of technology and climate anxiety.

ARTSWEST

Current Display in Gallery: Thoa Nguyen/Common Thread, 2-7 pm.

Familiar is how I feel about my art, it is personal and familiar. It is not too far from reality, and it is common. A repeat memory, a common dream, that I see throughout my life. A recognizable recurrence of places and time, familiar faces, and people. It is what I adore and is comforting. It is how I see my world. I paint the way I feel. The essence of it all, the life, the world, the smiles, and the expression. I invite you to see more around you, and to breath and live in it. My art is heavily influenced by Impressionism. Subjects are based on real-life scenes, objects, and people. Through my painting, I enjoy injecting an energy and vibrancy to these everyday subjects. My paintings typically omit the superfluous, and capture just the essentials, arranging them into a more powerful and significant whole. Concentrating on the essentials is where I believe I can be more thoughtful and expressive. As a young child, I was always drawing and recognize that from then to now, art is an essential part of who I am. I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree at Metropolitan State University of Denver in 1989 in Communications Multi-Major, with a concentration in visual communication.

West Seattle Cellars

At our Art Walk event on Thursday, November 9, our weekly tasting will feature wines from the Beaujolais region of France. Come by and enjoy Debbiโ€™s artwork while you sample some great wines for fall.

Debbi Murray INDOORS + RECEPTION 5:30pm-8pm

Debbiโ€™s current series was born out of the isolation and smallness of life during the pandemic. Working with a theme of controlled chaos and a riotous neon palette, she realized she was simply painting what she needed to get through the darkness of those times. A corner of control within the chaos. These very opposites are reflected in the dialog between the light and the dark. The neon color contrasting sharply within this conversation. Debbiโ€™s work explores the space where vibrant delights dance with our inner shadows. Happy colors lurk, evoking emotional struggleโ€”a paradox on canvas. A former graphic designer with a passion for the unexpected, Debbi finds that structure elevates whimsy. Acrylics, markings, and collage elements combine to form layers and texture, creating a rich outer landscape for the expression of inner ideas. Debbi lives and creates in West Seattle, often accompanied by her twin shadow cats, Dexter and Pepper.

POCKETBIRDS

Micheal Lentz is a home designer, maker-builder, and whittler. His creative endeavors, both professional and artistic, rely on the inspiration he finds in movement, travel, and seasonal migration. Through movement he locates and grounds himself in both natural and urban environments be it on foot, by bicycle, by motorcycle, through vanlife camping, or paddling. He loves mountains, deserts, rivers and lakes, and forests. Base camped in Southeast Seattle, he makes forays into the Mojave Desert interspersed with adventures in the PNW and abroad. He also spends deliberate time, even in winter, where he grew up deep in the woods of Ontario, Canada. It was here he learned to wield axes and knives from his father, who lovingly supplied friends and family with wooden utensils. This wood carving hobby is also kept alive by his siblings.

Mailbox West is excited to showcase two artists this month, Sara Everett and resident artist Glenda Weibel.

Sara Everett BUSINESS HOUR DISPLAY ONLY Artist will not be in attendance

My paintings are torn, cut and then stitched back together appease a small part of my simmering frustration with global environmental policies. My pieces act as totems for species and places that are barely hanging on by a thread.

Glenda Weibel BUSINESS HOUR DISPLAY ONLY

Glenda is a watercolor artist who has lived in West Seattle for over 20 years. She loves the immediacy and fluidity of watercolor.
