Featured Q4 Artist! Congratulations to our fourth quarter featured artist Maggie Sharar. The West Seattle Arts’ Council loved the fluidity, the colors and the bright eyes of woman shown in “The Loop.” Maggie will be the featured artist at Jet City Labs in December.
Art of Music @ December Art Walk

The upcoming December 14 West Seattle Art Walk will feature Art of Music with events in the Admiral District, Alaska Junction, and Morgan Junction!
December 14 Performer Sue Quigley @ West Seattle Grounds in the Alaska Junction. Raised in the nuclear plains of Eastern Washington, Sue stole her sister’s guitar (abandoned for boys) at 13 and started writing songs about getting out of town and living another life. After graduating from college, fighting forest fires all over the west, and getting some heartbreak in, she settled in Seattle and started doing some open mics. It was finally after seeing mutual friend Brandi Carlile play that she got the guts up to put a band together and make an EP. Then a full-length CD “Perfect Chaos”. The single “Paper Tiger” from that CD was Runner Up for Song of the Year (Songoftheyear.com). She was one of the Top 15 finalists in Carla DeSantis’ (Rockergrl) “Discoveries” Contest and has played the Viper Room in Hollywood, showcased twice at SXSW in Austin, TX, and solo-toured the West Coast and Ireland. She has performed locally in her beloved Seattle at the Hard Rock, ConorByrne, Tractor Tavern, Crocodile Cafe, Showbox, and for 6,000 Seattle Storm fans as halftime entertainment. Click here for Sue Quigley’s flyer.

December 14 Performer Rik Wright’s Fundamental Forces @ Great American Diner & Bar in the Alaska Junction. Like jazz, but not. Rik Wright is an award-winning guitarist known for his genre-bending performances – worldbeat one minute, rock the next, a touch of jam band, and back to the core of jazz. Blending forward-thinking arrangements with a solid groove that listeners can tap their toe to, his Fundamental Forces quartet has an undeniable allure that has propelled them all the way to the top of the public radio charts.
Wright has taken his love and passion for the guitar to just about every corner of the Pacific Northwest, performing at Bumbershoot, Northwest Folklife, Bite of Seattle, and enumerable other community and arts festivals throughout the region. He has placed four albums in the Top 10 of both the Roots Music and CMJ radio charts, including a #1 spot on the CMJ Jazz chart. Rik has been honored with numerous awards including both an Earshot Jazz Golden Ear Award for “Best Alternative Jazz Group”, and as one of Seattle Weekly’s “Best of Seattle” jazz performers. His efforts have been generously supported by 4Culture, the Seattle Public Library’s PlayBack program, and the Jack Straw Foundation. Rik is listed in both the Arts Northwest on Tour and the King County Touring Arts rosters, which are juried directories of the Pacific Northwest’s very best performing artists. You can view videos of Rik Wright’s Fundamental Forces performing here, here, and here! Click here for Rik Wright’s flyer.

December 14 Performer Matt Cecil @ Zeeks Pizza in the Morgan Junction. Matt Cecil is a highly praised lute player in the Pacific Northwest’s Living History community, playing prominent performances at major events for the Society for Creative Anachronism, an international Renaissance and Medieval recreation organization. Most recently his musical performances achieved the highest score in their annual Arts and Sciences competition. He specializes in the lute music of John Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare. When he’s not making music, Matt works for Amazon and lives in the Admiral district of West Seattle with his wife and two sons. Matt’s music represents the soundtrack of life in Elizabethan England, and would have been heard by Shakespeare and Queen Elizabeth. The Renaissance lute is the ancestor of the modern guitar, and the repertoire from its Golden Age around the year 1600 displays incredible virtuosity and melancholy beauty. Matt performs a combination of self-accompanied lute songs and lute solo pieces on a beautiful lute which is a detailed recreation of the instruments of the time. Click here for Matt Cecil’s flyer. For a preview of Matt Cecil performing click here.

Each musician will be performing family-friendly content for 90 minutes at their Art of Music event, from 6:00 pm to 7:45 pm, with one 15-minute break at the midway point.

Rena Haveson INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5pm-8pm
Rena Haveson has been painting for 25 years. She began her education at Boston University studying Art and Art History. From 1988 to 1996 she owned and operated an art gallery in Pittsburgh, PA., displaying works by contemporary American painters, including her own. Strong color and passion for life are evident in her work. Subject matter is often expressionistic, with dream-like qualities. She often uses a palette knife or collage techniques to enrich the canvas. This is to allow the viewer to constantly wander in and out of reality while perceiving the painting. The Faces series is a collection of feelings and emotions that lend themselves to an abstract vision. The paint is built up with layers of acrylic and oil and then it is painted over again so that there is a sense of mystery of what was before, beneath the layers of paint.

SHE ANSWERED THE CALL OF THE WILD!
Brittany Noelle is the founding/principal artist of PNW Orca Pod Squad Photography. Raised in the green mountains of Vermont, her love of nature began as a child while exploring the wilds of Acadia National Park in Maine. After witnessing their breaching in the Salish Sea her love of whales was solidified. Now a whale enthusiast and conservation activist, she spends countless hours along the west coast documenting these majestic creatures, when not focused on the challenges of Harborview Medical Center’s Emergency Department . You can usually find her with her two “”land Orcas”” (Heli and Roosevelt), camera in tow, along the shores of the Pacific, roaming from Oregon to the San Juan Islands. As a wildlife photographer, naturalist and conservation advocate she enjoys connecting people with our local ecosystem and the animals that call the Salish Sea and the Pacific Northwest home.
In 2023, 5% of all sales will be donated to Killer Whale Tales and Salish Wildlife Watch. Killer Whale Tales is a local non-profit environmental education program that uses storytelling and field-based science to inspire students to take an active role in the conservation of Southern Resident killer whales and their habitat. Salish Wildlife Watch is a local non-profit group that manages a WhatsApp notification platform dedicated to alerting members to whales (Orcas, Humpback whales, Grey whales) and rare/unusual marine mammals and birds in Central Puget Sound. They strive to make it easier for residents around Puget Sound to have wondrous experiences with our local wildlife and to inspire people to advocate and protect the environment and wildlife of the Salish Sea.

Carolyn Autenrieth INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5pm – 8pm. Artist will not be in attendance.
My work contemplates transformative processes in the natural world and celebrates nuance and surprises found in the ‘ordinary’. The work is part of an investigative process of discovering narrative, metaphor, and beauty, to invite a deeper response. This group of works celebrates forms and subjects of the PNW through color and contrast. Altered ceramic forms derived from nature, explore metaphor through balance of texture and light, inviting a tactile response. Sea star paintings, inspired by recent wasting disease, bring into focus some of the delicate and resilient aspects of our tidal areas.

Brittney High INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5pm-7pm
I began my art journey as a form of spiritual awakening and art therapy and in 2020. During both the calm and turbulent eras of my life, I escaped to my artsy world and explored ways to express my emotions, anxieties, hopes, joys, and fears through acrylic pouring and fluid art. The colors that I use in each piece usually correspond to my general mood over a period of time (like feeling “blue”) or a genre of music that I am exploring over a period of time (like psychedelic doom metal). I focus on the meaning behind the colors, moods, and emerging themes in each of the unique paintings in order to better understand my emotional, mental, and spiritual states at the time of painting. Since fluid art is notoriously difficult to control, each piece is a one-of-a-kind interaction between my artistic side and the laws of fluid dynamics. Each piece also taught me to just “Let go and let it flow” both in my artwork and in my daily life. Once I stopped trying to control the process, the artwork began to flow more naturally and I began to express myself more effectively. I was inspired by a verse in Psalms 62:8: “Trust in Him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before Him: for YHWH is a refuge.” I later incorporated what I call mirror sessions where I imposed symmetry on an original painting using a digital software (check out my Esty account for mirror session prints!). Outside of creating art, I am a graduate student at the University of Washington where I study philosophy. My main areas of interest include philosophy of science, philosophy of physics, and metaphysics of science. To see more of my artwork, check out my Instagram page or my Esty shop. Hope yall enjoy!!

Deb McCarroll’s bold work embodies the Northwest’s regional culture. Patterns are created with Seattle’s ubiquitous falling rain. Paper is integrated into wet paint and then set on fire. Metal leaf is frequently woven into scenes and selectively oxidized with acid to add patinas in glittering greens and browns. Local flora and fauna are painted in startling realism and then pared with raw abstract practices.

Common Thread
Familiar is how I feel about my art, it is personal and familiar. It is not too far from reality, and it is common. A repeat memory, a common dream, that I see throughout my life. A recognizable recurrence of places and time, familiar faces, and people. It is what I adore and is comforting. It is how I see my world. I paint the way I feel. The essence of it all, the life, the world, the smiles, and the expression. I invite you to see more around you, and to breath and live in it. My art is heavily influenced by Impressionism. Subjects are based on real-life scenes, objects, and people. Through my painting, I enjoy injecting an energy and vibrancy to these everyday subjects. My paintings typically omit the superfluous, and capture just the essentials, arranging them into a more powerful and significant whole. Concentrating on the essentials is where I believe I can be more thoughtful and expressive. As a young child, I was always drawing and recognize that from then to now, art is an essential part of who I am. I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree at Metropolitan State University of Denver in 1989 in Communications Multi-Major, with a concentration in visual communication.

Coastal Expressions
“T. Frick is a local West Seattle artist. A Landscape Architect by profession, T. has always been fascinated by the powerful yet subtle qualities of the landscape. T’s artwork is an abstraction of the world around us and her experiences both in nature and in the urban environment. T is an intuitive painter, starting with no preset direction or destination. “”Each piece is a journey – I let the painting guide me and use the canvas to express what I often cannot in words. My goal is to create something that evokes emotion and inspires the eye to go wherever it wants to go.””
For the December show, T. will be sharing her new Coastal Expressions series. “”I am constantly in awe of the coastal landscape – the rugged and wild moments juxtaposed with its serene, almost therapeutic nature. I can hear the waves speaking to me during each visit and when I’m back in Seattle, I can hear the coast beckoning me back. I decided to capture some of the qualities on canvas to bring a piece of the ocean here to the city. I hope you’ll come check out this new exhibit!”

Maggie Sharar, West Seattle Artwalk Featured Quarterly Artist
A channel to the divine. A mother. A creator. This is Maggie Sharar. Her watercolor paintings illustrate lost and found souls. They invite you into a healing journey. A woman’s truth. Her feminine portraits and forms embody sovereignty and the potent experience of being human. Each piece holds the energy of love, magic, healing, and connection. But most of all Maggie’s work is a kinetic way to create and release energy. Maggie’s creative journey began long ago in the land of sand and sun. Florida. There she grew up on the nature coast soaking in the sights and sounds of cicadas, alligators, moccasins, and manatees. She attended Savannah College of Art and design in 2004. In 2007 the artist found herself in the Orlando area, there she got her feet wet showing in over 20 exhibitions with a series called The Birds. In 2010 the artist slowed down creatively and turned towards motherhood. When Maggie’s daughter was 6 months old her young family made their way west to Seattle. In 2017 her world shifted when she became a single Mother of two children and began her road to recovery from years of abuse. It was then she poured her heart back into her paintings. These works illuminate a lust to let go. To leave the physical body and find the roots of the subconscious. And then, to come home to the body and heal. Presently Maggie is selling her art work full time and thriving. She is also teaching both technical watercolor classes, energetic healing watercolor classes, and private fine art sip and paint parties.

Alizah Naomi Olivas, ANO Jewelry INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5pm-8pm
Hi friends! I’m Alizah Naomi Olivas, designer/creator of ANO Jewelry (aka: Alizah’s Jewelry). My jewelry journey began in the early 2000’s when I took a French beaded flower class with my sister. I then took wire wrapping & various beading classes at a local bead store. I learned what I liked as well as what I would never try again…seed bead woven bracelets anyone? Turns out the class that taught me how to fuse fine 99.9% silver was the most inspirational. Fusing can only happen if the metal is pure enough to have the same melting point…the ends join or bond together. No chemicals other than a butane flame was needed. Mind blowing! I could make big silver hoops in my living room! And I liked working with the silver…I liked that it was cold, liked bending it, hammering it, linking it…design possibilities were popping into my head. I’ve been selling for the last 10 years at Capers in West Seattle. All jewelry is made by me in my home studio with the endless support from my husband Paul and yellow labs Gracie & Jones. Without them, this would not be as fun!

Go Fish Art
I am a Bering Sea fisherman, involved with the pollack fishery. I am very proud to part of a well regulated and very sustainable fishery. I care about conservation very deeply for all the good reason as well as livelihood depends on it. I have quite a fascination with the beautiful structures that nature gives us. I started my art journey by assembling articulated fish skeletons using only sea life that had died by incidental bycatch of commercial fishing boats. Using these creatures, I feel that it celebrates their life. Now, I secure the skeletons from top experts in the field. Steve Husky PHD at South Kentucky University has prepared most of the skeletons. Most taxidermist will not prepare fish skeletons. Of those who do there are only a very few that can make them well enough for my purposes. Presently, I am making less than 20 pieces a year, some of which are made at sea. I really enjoy creating these composition, the fluid art, working the steel and design. My objective here is to share these pieces with everybody. It really shows all creatures are beautiful and no artist can out-do natures designs. Captain PETE

Debbi Murray INDOORS + RECEPTION 5:30pm-8pm
Debbi’s current series was born out of the isolation and smallness of life during the pandemic. Working with a theme of controlled chaos and a riotous neon palette, she realized she was simply painting what she needed to get through the darkness of those times. A corner of control within the chaos. These very opposites are reflected in the dialog between the light and the dark. The neon color contrasting sharply within this conversation. Debbi’s work explores the space where vibrant delights dance with our inner shadows. Happy colors lurk, evoking emotional struggle—a paradox on canvas. A former graphic designer with a passion for the unexpected, Debbi finds that structure elevates whimsy. Acrylics, markings, and collage elements combine to form layers and texture, creating a rich outer landscape for the expression of inner ideas. Debbi lives and creates in West Seattle, often accompanied by her twin shadow cats, Dexter and Pepper.

Flora Carlile-Kovacs
I use the most ancient and possibly the most endangered textile technique: combining hand-dyed wool and silk fabrics with water, soap and vigorous kneading, I create a durable, unwoven material: felt. After felting wearable art for more than a decade I developed a new technique to create 3-D wall textiles, in which I hand-fold the strips of silk fabrics into tiny pleats that stand up like little scales after the felting and shrinking and thus give a third dimension to these large wall-pieces. The size, the frequency and the direction of these scales outline a pixeled picture for the distant viewer. Depending on the position of the viewer – or the movement of the Sun – the light breaks differently on these silk scales and fills the piece with life. Handmade felt is an underestimated and underrepresented medium in the art world. My mission is to break the boundary between fine craft and art and bring felt back to the modern living spaces and interior design, and to find its audience.
