Welcome to the New Year! So, please join us for January’s West Seattle Art Walk. This is the time to visit all the art venues and find that special ‘ just-cuz-it’s the New Year’ gift for that special someone. As always, make sure to stop by our great neighborhood-sponsoring eateries to warm up and enjoy food and drink as you check out the holiday artwork in our neighborhood.
Art will be on display at 40 participating businesses and you can enjoy a wide variety of “Art Walk Specials” at 15 bars, restaurants and cafes (Check out our Facebook post for more info). So grab a Walking Map at any of the participating businesses below to plan your route!

The West Seattle Arts Council loved the Northwest winter landscape shown in soft lavender and vibrant purples. Linda Kemp Scheiber is a native NW artist that has been showing her pastel and oil paintings in the Puget Sound region since the 1990’s. “Anna Sparks is a mixed media artist, designer, photographer, and self-described ‘arranger of things’. After relocating from Seattle to NYC where she lived from 2016-2019, she moved back to the Pacific Northwest to recover from a sudden brain cancer diagnosis. She combines her love for traveling and visual storytelling with her desire to spread a message and document the changing environment through art. “La Vie en Rose” is a nod to her love for French culture and her passion for music. The mixed media pieces in this show depict seeing life through rose-colored glasses, or the experience of finding joy and staying positive despite life’s ups and downs. Anna Sparks was born in Seattle, WA, and is currently working remotely in West Seattle and focusing on her yoga practice, art making, and love for music.”

Deb McCarroll’s bold work embodies the Northwest’s regional culture. Patterns are created with Seattle’s ubiquitous falling rain. Paper is integrated into wet paint and then set on fire. Metal leaf is frequently woven into scenes and selectively oxidized with acid to add patinas in glittering greens and browns. Local flora and fauna are painted in startling realism and then pared with raw abstract practices.

Common Thread
Familiar is how I feel about my art, it is personal and familiar. It is not too far from reality, and it is common. A repeat memory, a common dream, that I see throughout my life. A recognizable recurrence of places and time, familiar faces, and people. It is what I adore and is comforting. It is how I see my world. I paint the way I feel. The essence of it all, the life, the world, the smiles, and the expression. I invite you to see more around you, and to breath and live in it. My art is heavily influenced by Impressionism. Subjects are based on real-life scenes, objects, and people. Through my painting, I enjoy injecting an energy and vibrancy to these everyday subjects. My paintings typically omit the superfluous, and capture just the essentials, arranging them into a more powerful and significant whole. Concentrating on the essentials is where I believe I can be more thoughtful and expressive. As a young child, I was always drawing and recognize that from then to now, art is an essential part of who I am. I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree at Metropolitan State University of Denver in 1989 in Communications Multi-Major, with a concentration in visual communication.

Suzanne is this quarter’s Featured Artist for the West Seattle Art Walk.
Suzanne Uschold has lived in West Seattle since 1987. After taking a basic quilting class in 2014, she quickly discovered a passion for art quilts, with a special interest in nature and landscapes. She never considered herself an artist until she realized she could “paint” with fabric and thread using a variety of techniques including collage, applique, thread painting and free motion quilting. She has shown her work in a variety of places including the International Quilt and Fiber Arts Festival, the Pacific NW Quilt and Fiber Arts Museum, Schack Art Center and Vashon Center for the Arts as well as many local businesses.

Jared grew up with a love for music, choir, and musicals, eventually finding a love for songwriting, which led him to Belmont University in Nashville, TN. Jared was able to take private voice, guitar, and piano lessons, enhancing his abilities in both songwriting and playing parts in studio sessions. In 2010, Jared graduated with a degree in Music Business, with an emphasis on Songwriting. He released his debut album, The Maiden Voyage, two years later. In 2014, Jared signed an independent publishing deal with Catch This Music. Between 2015 and 2020, he was performing between 100 to 150 tour dates a year, building towards dreams of owning his own studio and space. His newest releases include The Last Gemini in 2017 and This Week-Last Year in 2020.

I am a Bering Sea fisherman, involved with the pollack fishery. I am very proud to part of a well regulated and very sustainable fishery. I care about conservation very deeply for all the good reason as well as livelihood depends on it. I have quite a fascination with the beautiful structures that nature gives us. I started my art journey by assembling articulated fish skeletons using only sea life that had died by incidental bycatch of commercial fishing boats. Using these creatures, I feel that it celebrates their life. Now, I secure the skeletons from top experts in the field. Steve Husky PHD at South Kentucky University has prepared most of the skeletons. Most taxidermist will not prepare fish skeletons. Of those who do there are only a very few that can make them well enough for my purposes. Presently, I am making less than 20 pieces a year, some of which are made at sea. I really enjoy creating these composition, the fluid art, working the steel and design. My objective here is to share these pieces with everybody. It really shows all creatures are beautiful and no artist can out-do natures designs. Captain PETE
