Bri High INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5pm-8pm and Pop-Up of Lora Radford’s ceramics. Visit West Seattle Ground’s Facebook page for more information on this show.

B High on Art

I began my art journey as a form of spiritual awakening and art therapy in 2020. During both the calm and turbulent eras of my life, I escaped to my artsy world and explored ways to express my emotions, anxieties, hopes, joys, and fears through acrylic pouring and fluid art. The colors that I use in each piece usually correspond to my general mood over a period of time (like feeling “blue”) or a genre of music that I am exploring over a period of time (like doom jazz). I focus on the meaning behind the colors, moods, and emerging themes in each of the unique paintings in order to better understand my emotional, mental, and spiritual states at the time of painting. Since fluid art is notoriously difficult to control, each piece is a one-of-a-kind interaction between my artistic side and the laws of fluid dynamics. Each piece also taught me to just “Let go and let it flow” both in my artwork and in my daily life. Once I stopped trying to control the process, the artwork began to flow more naturally and I began to express myself more effectively.  It is written in Psalms 62:8, “Trust in Him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before YHWH: for He is a refuge.” And so I did.

Outside of creating art, I am a graduate student at the University of Washington where I study philosophy. My main areas of interest include philosophy of science, philosophy of physics, and metaphysics of science.

This collection of pieces captures her love for all things “In & By the Water”, and pays homage to her East Coast upbringing and West Coast home.

Charlie Piper: Charlie returned to West Seattle after earning degrees in Studio Art and Art History from the University of Vermont. For as long as I can remember, art has been incredibly important to me and has greatly influenced who I am today. For years, I’ve worked on my art to make it the best it can be. I love to draw portraits, landscapes, and clothing; I’ve begun to dabble in painting, mixed mediums, and more. Today, however, I want to show you my favorite form of art. Creation. Over the last few years, I picked up crochet as a means of coping with Severe Anxiety. I’d carry around a roll of yarn and a hook for when the day got to be a bit too much, and after a while, it had changed from a coping mechanism to something I truly loved doing. I started making gifts for friends and created hats for my dog, and now, every day, I find new things I wish to create.

JETT Landscape Architecture + Design

3445 California Ave SW

Heather Hargesheimer WINDOW SHOW ONLY 5pm-8pm

My medium is encaustic painting, the ancient technique of manipulating pigmented beeswax on panels. The process involves applying heated beeswax onto rigid surface, such as prepared wood. The colors are achieved from adding pigments to the melted beeswax. The medium’s luminosity and depth have led me through a series of studies of abstract compositions built with strong graphical relationships and layered with rich colors. My work is restrained, yet complex; inspired by nature, but abstracted in its use of forms. Encaustic painting has allowed me a way to open my artwork to a new level of abstraction while still maintaining my connection to the natural world.

Carrie Brazil INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5pm-8pm

Carrie, a proud Seattle native rooted in the vibrant community of West Seattle, has found immense joy in abstract pain. Carrie has always considered herself creative, but didn’t discover her love for abstract painting until experimenting with it again in 2021. In Carrie’s work, you can find echoes of love, connection, family and fun, as well as politics, empathy, grief and nature, in ways both subtle and obvious. “I paint to process, to relax, to celebrate. I paint with emotion, usually without any specific direction. Intuition is my guide. Art is not always comfortable or palatable.  It can challenge our perceptions and deepen our connection to the world around us. This collection of small works represents both peace and stillness, as well as bright playfulness.
While my art holds deep personal significance, my dream is to create pieces that evoke unique meaning to each viewer.” Through her art, Carrie seeks to navigate and make sense of the realities of today’s world, inviting us to join her on this journey.

Kevin Ducoing  INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5pm-8pm.

Kevin Ducoing lives in West Seattle. He has lived in Washington since 1982 when his family left California and put down roots in the Pacific Northwest. Kevin immediately felt the draw of PNW aesthetic; damp, but clean and crisp, most times a bit more monochromatic than many other places. Kevin studied at the Art Institute of Seattle, and was notably influenced by instructor Bill Cumming there during the early 1990s. Kevin’s work reflects what may be the Pacific Northwest mindset: infusion of gray skies, dark forests, sounds muted by ancient beds of pine needles, and local lore brimming with ghost stories. Kevin feels acutely the interaction of this aesthetic in the small towns that dot the landscape and push up against or raze ancient forest. His desire is to express this duality with the feeling that it is actually we who are the ghost stories, and that the landscape may tell its own stories about us.

Carmen Leslie INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5pm-8pm

Carmen Leslie’s introduction to art started at a very young age when her very artistic mother noticed a strong sense of creativity and execution in her drawings. Her penchant for art was further nurtured as she accompanied her mom to her college art classes and had access to all kinds of supplies and mediums for artistic expression. Her process of exhaustive layering results in intricate patterns often likened to city scapes or alien language lulls one into meditative observation while they participate in a where’s Waldo search for the details that resonate to them. Carmen finds her inspiration in nature and flora and delights in the shock of a flower deeply saturated in color or the calm chaos of the organic pattern of branches backlit by the sky.

I am a long time artist with a distinctive intricate abstract style. I’ve never shown my works publicly before but have done commissions through word of mouth. I am very excited to share!

Forever his paintings have been a personal reflection of some of the deepest emotions triggered by personal events. Come join him as he puts out his most secret inner emotions up for display.

“The Beauty industry has the ability to straighten ones emotional posture.”  I live by this quote.  Every time you get your hair done, put on that lipstick, wake up to refreshed skin from that mask you put on the previous night, you smile.  You smile because you love the person you see in the mirror.  You feel good.  This is why I do what I do.  If I can help put a smile on your face, I know I’ve done my best work.  To achieve this I have spent years on my education and continue to seek out new techniques every year.  Everything from color theory, understanding bone structure, advance hair coloring and cutting techniques, to advanced skin care and master classes with some of the most influential makeup artists of our time.  I have had the honor to work with many celebrities and fashion designers in my time, but what I enjoy most is hanging out with my clients in the salon. Naomi Cooper BUSINESS HOUR DISPLAY. Open until 11:30pm.

Canna West Seattle is excited to welcome back local artist Naomi Cooper. Stop by to check out her new works in ink, featuring the Sea Blue Flow, on display during the month of June. Open daily from 8:30am-11:30pm. 21+

About the Artist: Naomi Jean Cooper creates art that evokes a dimension where space and time fold together in ways that are not easily understood. Naomi’s creative process is a somatic spiritual practice driven by curiosity and desire.  “When I tune into and trust the present sensations in my body, I enter a flow state that deepens my connection to the infinite, creative, compassionate energy that is both within me and beyond me. Her art is an invitation to be here now. It is an exploration of the natural cycles that are found in our bodies and throughout the cosmos: order and chaos, life and death, expansion and contraction. She sometimes uses elements of sacred geometry and ancient symbols to explore these themes. At times her work has direct references to traditional Celtic art, which aligns with her ancestry. Naomi works in a variety of mediums including graphite, ink, acrylic paint, and digital methods. Each one provides unique expressions of her recurring themes. Naomi enjoys creating in a variety of locations, and allowing the energy of the place to influence her work. She find this helps her stay curious and playful. She creates in her studio, in nature, in bookstores, during live music at local venues, and wherever else she may find herself with a little free time, a pencil, and a piece of paper.
Naomi is a Seattle-based artist who was born in Chicago, IL and split her childhood time between the Midwest and Washington State. She has a BA in Visual Communications from Judson University in Elign, IL (greater Chicago area).

When Feathers Appear

When Feathers Appear, the studies in graphite, began with the beckoning sound of birdsong.  Usually in the woods, frequently by the shore, birdsong filled the air.  It became the soundtrack of my life, it would seem.  I was aware and I appreciated all that was before me.   One day, life changed for me, as it does for everyone.  After experiencing profound loss, I rarely heard or even enjoyed the birdsong.  I began to look down; I began to wrap myself in thoughts of all that I had lost.  Still wandering in the woods, still finding myself by the shoreline, I eventually began to see , and I began to look for signs, signs of forward thinking, signs of hope. And feathers appeared before me…hence, my inspiration.

Hope is a thing with feathers
That perches in the soul
And sings the tune without the words
And never stops at all

Malia Mercer

My studio is a small batch pottery in Bothell, WA, where I focus on hand crafting one of a kind functional ceramics. I found my love for pottery after working in graphic design and architectural rendering. While working in this digital world for years a desire grew to ‘get my hands dirty’. I wanted to learn color fundamentals, so I started taking painting classes. This led me to other fine arts classes, drawing, printmaking, figure drawing, block printing, woodworking, and watercolor. I started taking pottery classes in 2018 and when Covid hit my school closed but I was able to take a pottery wheel home. A year later I stumbled upon a friend who had a perfectly sized electric kiln that she was selling. All of this felt like collective kismet, and I started my small creative studio.

Sarah C.B. Guthrie INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5:30pm- 8pm

Seattle Joy

Sarah C.B. Guthrie is a Seattle-based painter and writer, specializing in vibrant works of contemporary pointillism designed to inspire joy. “To me, joy is an optimism of spirit we all carry within us and can be sparked through our actions. Paradoxically, we can (and need to) feel joy at the same time we feel anger, sadness, and grief,” she shared. Her paintings take a lot of inspiration from the natural world of the Pacific Northwest–our gorgeous gardens, trees, lakes, ponds, sunrises and sunsets. A special feature of her process is the array of colors within each brush mark. Her marks contain dozens of slender lines of color that engage the viewer in optically mixing the colors–inviting them into the process as they find their own joy in her non-objective paintings. Sarah’s paintings have been part of solo and group shows in museums, galleries, and businesses in Seattle, Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, and Washington DC, including at the prestigious Phillips Collection. Her works are held in private collections in Seattle, New York, London, Washington DC, California, and around the world.

Natasha Reali INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5-8pm

INTO THE VOID

This series is named after the daunting nature of learning something new, persevering & pursuing goals no matter how challenging it may be. This series is meant to pull the viewer into the moment of stepping into the unknown, while romanticizing the beauty of it. Natasha’s subject focus lies in people & the profound emotions they embody. Having explored many various mediums, from charcoal, ink & oil to watercolor & gouache, Natasha is now delving into a new focus. “”Into The Void”” marks her first ever acrylic series. Her journey began as a child. Her father’s military service meant frequent relocations, and art became a natural outlet. She excelled in high school, which led her to study at Central Washington University, receiving a minor in Studio Art. While at CWU she had the opportunity to paint murals for the university, participate in local art competitions, & represent the student body with a class gift to the university’s president. Natasha’s work is dedicated to her late grandfather, who was her biggest supporter & always filled with unconditional love, as well as to her family & friends, whose support has been invaluable in her artistic journey.
