Summer is here! Please join us and stroll around beautiful West Seattle to view artwork from all of our amazing local artist who are showing at over 40 participating businesses. Make sure to enjoy a wide variety of “Art Walk Specials” at 20 bars, restaurants and cafes (see map below) while viewing the evening art walk. At age 19, artist Austin Picinich is a vibrant painter and student at University of Washington. Austin merges realism with his imagination and paints with bright colors that pop. Austin’s first ever art show was at West Seattle Grounds three years ago, when he was 16. Since then, Austin has had booths in 40 art festivals and his art is carried in 70 shops across WA. Austin is also the founder of the Save Our Salmon mural series, and he has painted over 400 feet of murals along Puget Sound streams.

Jiliane Patriarca discovered her inner-child’s buried need to create and paint during the stillness of quarantine. Her abstract acrylic art is the physical embodiment of her psychological dive into the depths of her soul – a quest for her version of happiness and true self beyond self-built constraint. Learning to feel and yearning for touch, she points mostly with her dads and palette knives as opposed to brush. Seeking stability, she paints on the floor to keep her grounded. Music and painting are inextricably tied together for each of Jiliane’s paintings; every piece is created to one song on repeat. Collectors of her art are let in on that little secret.

I came back to art in my thirties when I found myself bored and needed to find a new groove and I remembered I like to draw, I bought some canvases, a paint set, and brushes and have not stopped since. My faceless artwork are about my family, friends, things I’ve done and seen illustrating movement, emotions, and stories with brilliant colors. My work has been showed in Washington’s State art galleries, Northwest African American Museum, and juried art shows and published as front covers of booklets.

I started my art career in Hollywood at 16 with my artwork commissioned by the Discovery Channel and History Channel – the family portraits on the documentary covering the Amityville Murder are my drawings. Most of my artwork is abstract, focusing on the human experience. However, for this month’s art walk, I am simply sharing a few photographs from my travels across the USA to accompany the band, The Garbage Society, who we are hosting and will be playing from 6 to 8 pm at the studio!

 Check out the new band, “The Garbage Society,” at this art walk from 6 – 8 PM. Chet and Danny met in their back alley and bonded over a mutual appreciation of music and alley animals. Danny is a well-traveled but longtime Seattleite, while Chet hails from Louisiana. Join us as they play a collection of covers and original music that spans grunge, country, punk, and blues.

July Art Walk welcomes live music to WEND, courtesy of The Art of Music. You’ll be serenaded by the crisp, clean, mountain air sounds of Norman Baker and his guitar.

Lauren Quist

Lauren Quist is inspired by the challenge of achieving harmony through the interplay of hard and soft mediums, blending the softness of impressionism with the contrast of illustrative art.

Her process begins with a photograph, which she transforms into mixed media paintings on canvas through sketching, painting, and lastly embroidery. By incorporating embroidery, she allows light to dance dynamically over the canvas, exploring how it touches various surfaces and highlighting the contrasts within. Through art, Lauren aims to engage viewers in a deeper exploration of these captured instances, inviting them to share in the beauty and complexity of the world as she sees it. After graduating high school, she attended the University of Washington to study architecture but graduated instead with a Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Visual Arts (IVA). Her first mixed media painting, created for her senior studio, combined oil paints and embroidery floss on canvas. In 2013, she participated in her first professional art show, “”Around the Square,”” where she won the Popular Vote Award. Since then, Lauren has continued to exhibit work in several art shows across the Pacific Northwest.

Bumper Sticker on a Ferrari

This show depicts orchids with various permanent changes made to them. The series of work is meant to call out the strength and resilience of femininity and the harmful comments women receive when making permanent changes to their own bodies. The title of the show refers to a comment the artist has actually received; “Why would she get that tattoo? It’s like slapping a bumper sticker on a Ferrari!”

I’m Clara, and I am the most type-A efficient artist you’ll ever meet. Born in Boise, Idaho I lived periodically in other countries around the world-each time returning back to my conservative state. This was an interesting childhood; which resulted in an incredibly boisterous, curious and structured artist.

I have a bachelor’s in Fine Arts and a Masters in Business and Marketing- I like the best of both worlds, what can I say? Meeting new people brings constant light into my life…so if you’re willing to hear my side of things, then I can’t wait to hear yours.

Heather Hargesheimer BUSINESS HOUR DISPLAY ONLY

My medium is encaustic painting, the ancient technique of manipulating pigmented beeswax on panels. The process involves applying heated beeswax onto rigid surface, such as prepared wood. The colors are achieved from adding pigments to the melted beeswax. The medium’s luminosity and depth have led me through a series of studies of abstract compositions built with strong graphical relationships and layered with rich colors. My work is restrained, yet complex; inspired by nature, but abstracted in its use of forms. Encaustic painting has allowed me a way to open my artwork to a new level of abstraction while still maintaining my connection to the natural world.

Originally from rural New Mexico, painter Deb McCarroll has used unconventional techniques to achieve emotional depth in her work for more than three decades. Her work is featured in numerous private collections, including multiple works in the Seattle Paramount Hotel’s permanent collection. Among her many accolades, she was a feature in the Curators Pick within the Spring 2023 issue of the international arts magazine, Women United. She was the featured cover artist in Still Point Quarterly’s 2018 ‘Four Freedoms’ limited-edition book. In 2020 she was awarded the Special Merit prize in Light, Space and Time Gallery’s Figurative competition.

A long time West Seattle resident, Suzanne Uschold is inspired by the abundant natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. She creates quilted landscapes with a variety of techniques including collage, applique, thread painting and free motion quilting. Suzanne has shown her work at the International Quilt and Fiber Arts Festival, Pacific NW Quilt and Fiber Arts Museum and Vashon Center for the Arts. I am drawn to experimentation. Using different media, working in series, forming a relationship with media and themes – I try to tell a story as that relationship evolves. While there may be color, whimsy and a touch of iconoclasm in my work, I try to exercise discernment and reverence for the essence of my subjects. Carrie, a proud Seattle native rooted in the vibrant community of West Seattle, has found immense joy in abstract pain. Carrie has always considered herself creative, but didn’t discover her love for abstract painting until experimenting with it again in 2021. In Carrie’s work, you can find echoes of love, connection, family and fun, as well as politics, empathy, grief and nature, in ways both subtle and obvious. “I paint to process, to relax, to celebrate. I paint with emotion, usually without any specific direction. Intuition is my guide. Art is not always comfortable or palatable.  It can challenge our perceptions and deepen our connection to the world around us. This collection of small works represents both peace and stillness, as well as bright playfulness.

Aerin Sizelove is an artist who currently resides in Seattle. She lived in
San Francisco for the last 18 years where she learned sculpture. She
always had a strong interest in art starting at a very young age, when
she was a child, she enjoyed painting among other mediums. She
attended the Illinois Institute of Art in Chicago where she received a
Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design in 2003. Since then, she has
experimented in many mediums of sculpture, printmaking, ceramics
and mixed media while continuing to paint.

Kevin Ducoing  INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5pm-8pm.

Kevin Ducoing lives in West Seattle. He has lived in Washington since 1982 when his family left California and put down roots in the Pacific Northwest. Kevin immediately felt the draw of PNW aesthetic; damp, but clean and crisp, most times a bit more monochromatic than many other places. Kevin studied at the Art Institute of Seattle, and was notably influenced by instructor Bill Cumming there during the early 1990s. Kevin’s work reflects what may be the Pacific Northwest mindset: infusion of gray skies, dark forests, sounds muted by ancient beds of pine needles, and local lore brimming with ghost stories. Kevin feels acutely the interaction of this aesthetic in the small towns that dot the landscape and push up against or raze ancient forest. His desire is to express this duality with the feeling that it is actually we who are the ghost stories, and that the landscape may tell its own stories about us.

Carmen Leslie’s introduction to art started at a very young age when her very artistic mother noticed a strong sense of creativity and execution in her drawings. Her penchant for art was further nurtured as she accompanied her mom to her college art classes and had access to all kinds of supplies and mediums for artistic expression. Her process of exhaustive layering results in intricate patterns often likened to city scapes or alien language lulls one into meditative observation while they participate in a where’s Waldo search for the details that resonate to them. Carmen finds her inspiration in nature and flora and delights in the shock of a flower deeply saturated in color or the calm chaos of the organic pattern of branches backlit by the sky.

I am a long time artist with a distinctive intricate abstract style. I’ve never shown my works publicly before but have done commissions through word of mouth. I am very excited to share!

About the Artist: Naomi Jean Cooper creates art that evokes a dimension where space and time fold together in ways that are not easily understood. Naomi’s creative process is a somatic spiritual practice driven by curiosity and desire.  “When I tune into and trust the present sensations in my body, I enter a flow state that deepens my connection to the infinite, creative, compassionate energy that is both within me and beyond me. Her art is an invitation to be here now. It is an exploration of the natural cycles that are found in our bodies and throughout the cosmos: order and chaos, life and death, expansion and contraction. She sometimes uses elements of sacred geometry and ancient symbols to explore these themes. At times her work has direct references to traditional Celtic art, which aligns with her ancestry. Naomi works in a variety of mediums including graphite, ink, acrylic paint, and digital methods. Each one provides unique expressions of her recurring themes. Naomi enjoys creating in a variety of locations, and allowing the energy of the place to influence her work. She find this helps her stay curious and playful. She creates in her studio, in nature, in bookstores, during live music at local venues, and wherever else she may find herself with a little free time, a pencil, and a piece of paper.
Naomi is a Seattle-based artist who was born in Chicago, IL and split her childhood time between the Midwest and Washington State. She has a BA in Visual Communications from Judson University in Elign, IL (greater Chicago area).

Dana lives on San Juan Island where the wild beauty of Mother Nature is vibrant and ever-changing. She is deeply influenced by the motion and rhythms of nature. Her hand woven wall hangings are inspired by seasonal shifts of sunlight, ocean reflections and hidden growth within mossy forests. She seeks to create both a visual, tactile and emotional experience for the viewer by intricately weaving meaning and feeling into texture and color. Each unique tapestry exhibits a sense of peaceful movement, inviting the viewer inwards to experience a moment of stillness, quiet beauty and nourishment for the soul.
