Emily Juarez INDOOR SHOW & RECEPTION, 5pm-8pm

The artist, Emily Juarez, lives in West Seattle. Emily works with local pups and coffee beans. She’s a lifelong artist, wanderer and silly goose. When she’s not creating art pieces, Emily spends her time with her partner and pup, Ben and Finch, making music, playing video games and dog training the local canines.

Live Tender Ivy

The first piece I created in this series is “Dandelions”, which are like suns growing beneath our feet, and was inspired by my own mother’s love, support, and warmth. Those in my life who show compassion to others inspire me greatly. In gathering references for these pieces, I let these feelings guide me: strength, guidance, and protectiveness. My hope is that as you view these drawings, you will feel the same strength from the women and flowers depicted. May you take in the perseverance they each display to stand tall, continue to grow, and Live Tenderly. The artist, Emily Juarez, lives in West Seattle. Emily works with local pups and coffee beans. Megan Carroll BUSINESS HOUR DISPLAY ONLY 5pm-8pm

Megan Carroll is a mixed media visual conceptual artist originally from Vancouver, BC, now based in Seattle, WA. Her work delves into themes of domesticity, caregiving, and feminism, often employing acts of labor to create compelling pieces. Megan’s diverse mediums include textiles, embroidery, weaving, painting, and storytelling, all intricately woven together to explore her artistic vision.

In this body of work, I have gathered pieces created over the past few years during my journey through the Master of Fine Art program. These works are an exploration of color, shape, and play—born out of the fleeting, in-between moments of my daily life. Unlike the focused intensity of my thesis exhibition, which delved into the relentless demands of caregiving, household maintenance, and the weight of grief, these pieces offer a quiet reprieve. They are a small breath of fresh air, providing solace and reflection. Both bodies of work stem from the same well of influence, but while my thesis aimed to highlight the challenges, these pieces gently seek out the solutions. They embody the act of finding joy and lightness amidst the weighty responsibilities of life, a reminder that beauty can be found even in the smallest moments of respite.

Heather Hargesheimer INDDORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5pm-8pm

My medium is encaustic painting, the ancient technique of manipulating pigmented beeswax on panels. The process involves applying heated beeswax onto rigid surface, such as prepared wood. The colors are achieved from adding pigments to the melted beeswax. The medium’s luminosity and depth have led me through a series of studies of abstract compositions built with strong graphical relationships and layered with rich colors. My work is restrained, yet complex; inspired by nature, but abstracted in its use of forms. Encaustic painting has allowed me a way to open my artwork to a new level of abstraction while still maintaining my connection to the natural world.

Soaring Song

About the Artist

With a passion for capturing the beauty and essence of the world through her art Jayashree Krishnan is an accomplished artist known for her stunning portraits and landscapes. Her unique style of blending abstract and representational techniques has garnered her recognition in the artistic community. A testament to her versatility, Jayashree has also taken on larger projects such as a mural for the city of Seattle showcasing its rich history and culture. (Drive over to Columbia City to see the mural near the gallery). Jayashree uses her art as a means to tell powerful stories. During the pandemic her focus was on portraying the bravery and sacrifice of healthcare workers in her series “Caring for Humanity” where she painted portraits to 200 healthcare workers from different parts of the world including Dr.Fauci.

The Collection

The body of work you see here is a collection centered around a new subject matter – raptors. With a special focus on the Kite also known as Garuda and Vultures of India, Jayashree uses timeless Sanskrit poetry as her inspiration creating captivating pieces that celebrate the beauty and significance of these majestic birds in today’s world.

Wisdom of the Ages

Haliastur Indus also known as the Brahminy Kite is a revered bird with the common name “Garuda”. This is part of a series of paintings centered around raptors and their place in the world. A set of poems from the 13th century, written in Sanskrit, speak of their environment. One of the poems on the Garuda was the inspiration behind this piece. The concentric circles and the pentagram show a placement of syllables of the poem that trace the flight path of this raptor. The poet drew these geometric diagrams (Yantra) alongside the poem he etched on palm fronds. The skies they roam in and the forests they inhabit and the food they hunt are all under threat now. Many species of vultures and birds of prey face extinction. This begs the question, Where is their shelter ?

Her experience is that these opposites exist intertwined in life. Michelle’s paintings reflect this complexity, and it is her wish that they inspire people to be lifted by life’s goodness made richer by difficult times. In addition to private collections, her work has been shown at Parklane Gallery, Kirkland Arts Center, Seattle Superfine Art Fair, and Museum of Northwest Art’s Annual Art Auctions.

CLOSING RECEPTION

Cosmic Grids/Morphetica

Jessie Summa Russo studied printmaking and painting at Sarah Lawrence College in New York and illustration at Massachusetts College of Art & Design. Based in West Seattle since 1997, she founded the venue Skylark Café & Club in 2006 and ran it until 2013. She is currently the Gallery Director at Gallery 110 in downtown Seattle. The pieces in this show are from two collections. Cosmic Grids: At its most basic level, our universe exists as a “vibrant energy field” that Nobel-winning physicist Frank Wilczek calls The Grid. In these collaged oil paintings, each square represents a life—some bright, some indistinct, some full of contrast, and some just a brief and incomplete sliver—that belongs to and in the blue-black void of space equally. Morphetica: These abstract expressionist paintings are inspired by recurring dreamscapes and hypnopompic hallucinations—vivid sensory experiences that occur as a person wakes up from sleep.

Leon Lowman BUSINESS HOUR DISPLAY ONLY 5pm- 7pm.

I was first introduced to painting with acrylics as a teenager, by my high school art teacher. At first I painted Caribbean land and seascapes while growing up in Puerto Rico. I then slowly began experimenting in abstracts and collage. My focus is to create vibrant abstract compositions that reflect my past surroundings in the Caribbean – the contrast the strong sunlight creates, the open spaces, the freedom of the ocean breeze, and the joyous and spirited lifestyle that flows freely on the island. The challenge of creating an abstract composition that makes sense to the artist’s eye brings excitement to the process of painting. Painting allows me the freedom to borrow from my past, experiment in a meaningful context, and paint in a way that reflects the way I feel about the world today.

Leon Lowman received his B.A. in Art Education from Inter American University of Puerto Rico, and his M.A. in Painting from University of Northern Iowa. His work has been exhibited extensively in the Pacific Northwest. He has been featured nationally at places such as, San Diego Art Institute, Florida State University Gallery, and the Iowa State Exhibition, among many others. He was featured in the American Painters in Paris Exhibition
