Unique “Heart Rock” Melodies—Blended From an Origin of Folk, Pop, Country and Rock

Abby K draws upon many influences in her music from her childhood days in Kentucky and her exposure to the great American songwriters that transformed everyday stories into lyrical paintings. She conveniently short-hands her music as “Heart-Rock”, as humanity is a central theme of her songs, set to soundtracks as beautiful as the Pacific Northwest landscape, a place she calls home today. Since moving to Seattle, Abby has firmly planted deep roots in the songwriter/music community, where she performs regularly across the city and at festivals, including NorthWest Folk Life, Tumbleweed Music Festival, and the Tucson Folk Festival. With four albums under her belt, in 2023, she chose to give back, with great gratitude, to the very community that helped give Abby her start. Through her efforts, a new music community has sprouted in the center of Lake Washington, called Mosiac MI, where on a monthly basis, she inspires others to share their musical talents in a highly supportive and enriching environment.  For more information, please email Abby directly at lawndaisy31@gmail.com

Topical Americana Plus – A Journey Through Love, Loss, and the Beauty of Life

Steve and Kristi Nebel have globe-trotted for the better parts of their lifetimes, while gradually gluing together a blend of songs that exceeds the sum of their two parts.  Steve draws his wealth of inspiration writing songs from the arid agricultural regions of California to reminiscences of a DJ in the UK; a night drinking with a friend; what the Vietnam war has left some of us; and what is to come as the lights of life flicker.  They raise their voices against injustice from time to time, with words that don’t shy from knife-edge observations about the environmental changes surrounding all of us. * Steve’s song lyrics weave in and out of nature themes, many of which are informed by his lifelong passion for the Pacific Northwest, and colored with the characters from four generations of Washingtonians in his family. * Kristi says songwriters can never resist stuffing that four-letter word into songs: “L-O-V-E”.  Still it emerges, even after all these years of performing together, with music as a seemingly endless source of fuel and fusing of energy between them.  “Thank you, Kristi, for your voice, and your love that has come so far with me.” – Steve * “I sing some of Steve’s songs in part to heal myself from what-ever has been eating at me at the time.  In addition to the joys some of these songs give me, they have been, on our long journey together, indispensable to the navigation of my soul through life’s twists and turns.”  – Kristi * They’re currently promoting their latest CD, “The Very First Time”.  It made its way into the March 2023 Folk Alliance International Folk Radio Chart of the top 50 projects played on folk radio programs. * “Raven Speaks”, the Nebel’s 2010 production was chosen to be among the top ten albums of the year by Bob Sherman, host of the award-winning show “Woody’s Children” broadcast on WFUV, New York. * They’ve done nine tours of the UK wherein they played Fylde Folk Festival twice, Baafest twice, the Moor and Coast Festival in Whitby, Captain Cook Festival in Middlesborough and more.  They also play local Washington state festivals, such as the Applesqueeze Festival in Steilacoom for the past seven years

July 10 – Golden Hart @ Great American Diner & Bar in the Alaska Junction

Heartwarming and Harmony-Drenched, Mixing Classica Americana with Modern Quirkiness

Click here for Golden Hart’s poster.  Click here to listen to music performed by Golden Hart.

Hailing from the Pacific Northwest, Golden Hart is a delightful mixtape by the guy and gal songwriters Dana Little (Late Tuesday, Preservation Society) and Joshua Dennis (Modern Relics, Westerly). Their heartfelt music is heartwarming and harmony-drenched, mixing classic Americana with modern quirkiness. It will make you want to laugh through your tears while you are singing along. With veteran Seattle multi-instrumentalist Brandon Milner (Campfire OK, Like Lightning) and drummer Sean Conta (Sadie J) backing them up, their sound is a dynamic and delicious good time.
Listen if you like: Fleetwood Mac, Elvis Costello, Fiona Apple, and/or when a cat cuddles up to sleep on you.

A native of Bainbridge Island, Karin started piano lessons at age eight. She studied with Professor Neal O’Doan at the UW and earned degrees in music and piano performance. She discovered a fascination for improvisation in college, and after graduation put away the books in favor of jazz. Her career has taken her around the U.S. and to Japan, Canada and Europe. She currently plays in the Atrium at 1201 3rd Avenue Tower in Seattle and at Kelnero in Edmonds. Karin received an artist support grant from the Jack Straw Foundation. She won first place in the Golden Key national competition for her composition, “Confluence”.  Karin is the leader of the Karin Kajita Jazz Quintet. The Quintet specializes in hard bop repertoire and Karin’s compositions. The Quintet also performs “The Life and Music of Duke Ellington” which traces the arc of Duke’s half century career through his tunes and the spoken word.

Al started playing the bass in the late 60’s in garage bands but began focusing on jazz upon entering high school, where he was the bassist in the nationally acclaimed Kent-Meridian High School Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Hal Sherman. Al studied bass with the great Gary Peacock while at K-M and later with Abraham Laboriel while attending Oberlin College and gigged on the New York Jazz scene before attending law school. Al returned to Seattle in 1983, where he has played with local musicians and ensembles while practicing law.

An Enchanting Repertoire of Music from Rio de Janeiro and Beyond

Discography; Reviews and Articles; Jazz Guitar Today Article

Marco Antonio de Carvalho is a Brazilian performing musician, guitarist, singer, and composer. Born in the São Cristóvão neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, he started out playing percussion with friends on the streets of his hometown. The guitar was ever-present in those days, so Marco developed his musical ability by “street learning” – playing by ear on the street, listening to friends and others with more experience. A favorite way to play was using the guitar as a percussion instrument and playing samba by tapping on tables and doors with his brother and friends. Marco fondly remembers warm days playing with friends under a tree on a sidewalk or at the beach where food and music merged. Music was all around when Marco was a teenager on his family’s home stereo and in the homes of relatives and friends, as well as live music at numerous street parties in Brazil throughout the year. At those parties, many people play instruments, sing, and dance. His experiences at Carnaval parades, matinee clubs, samba events, Tambores, and ritual rooms of Candomblé – the musical culture of his country – greatly influenced his musical development and style. At 17, he began to develop his personal sound, tone, and technique by playing professionally in nightclubs around Rio and playing Música Popular Brasileira while traveling across Brazil. Formally, he was trained at the Conservatório Brasileiro de Música and Instituto Villa-Lobos in Rio, where he studied musical theory, and harmony, and specifically, guitar performance with Sergio Vale and Juarez Carvalho (no relation). Marco studied harmony and composition privately with pianist Luiz Eça, and guitar with guitarist Helio Delmiro. He studied composition with Ronaldo Miranda at the Pro-Arte School of Music. Marco has performed with many musicians and accompanied crooners and singers across Brazil and the United States.  Eventually, he had the opportunity to play and tour with Bandolim player Paulo Sá. First in Rio and then on the East Coast of the United States. When an opportunity arose to play the West Coast, Marco took it, eventually establishing his residence in Seattle, Washington. There, he continues to expand his life’s repertoire performing an extensive catalog of original compositions and songs from Rio de Janeiro, recording with fabulous musicians, leading workshops, and teaching lessons on guitar.

Each musician will be performing family-friendly content for 90 minutes at their Art of Music event, from 6:00 pm to 7:45 pm, with one 15-minute break at the midway point.
