Welcome to the New Year! The art walk keeps expanding and we now have venues in the Admiral district, the Alaska and Morgan Junctions as well as Alki. So it may be rainy or cold outside but it will be warm and inviting at all the businesses that support our artists. Plus they usually have something nice to drink and nosh on! So, mark your calendars to join us Thursday January 8th! Also, make sure to enjoy a wide variety of “Art Walk Specials” at 20 cozy bars, restaurants and cafes (see map below) while viewing the evening art walk.

This post’s hero artwork is by Benjamin Jordan. Benjamin’s art is showing this month at John L. Scott Realty.

Please note: We will be updating the businesses and their artists as the week goes on. Please check back before Second Thursday evening!

Can’t Join on January 8th? Our photography team will be covering some of the receptions and will post photos and a recap in a post on our Facebook and Instagram accounts. Check out the social accounts of your favorite exhibiting business – they may post photos or video, too!

We also want to remind our Art Lovers that this event is powered by our participating artists, businesses, and restaurants. Thank you for all you do to celebrate our vibrant art scene in West Seattle!

Cody Esp INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5pm-9pm

My name is Cody, and I am an artist primarily working in paint. I hold a degree in Fine Art and Feminism from Humboldt State University (2011). My artistic journey has evolved from early work and small commissions after graduation to a focus on watercolor painting, which allowed me to dedicate more time to my art.

In 2022, I expanded my practice to include mural painting. Since completing my first city-commissioned mural at the local skate park, I have undertaken five additional city murals and eight private commissions. My mural work frequently incorporates themes of hands, flowers, and the mountain landscape. I pride myself on my adaptability and my commitment to understanding and fulfilling the vision of my clients. I have experience painting on diverse surfaces, both indoors and outdoors, ranging from smooth walls to corrugated metal. Clients consistently describe me as easy to collaborate with, enthusiastic, and efficient, with many returning for subsequent projects within six months, which I believe speaks to the value and impact of my artwork.

ARTSWEST (Art Walk Partner)

4711 CALIFORNIA AVE SW

John McLellan INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 2pm -7pm

Landscapes, hereabouts

Here are some landscapes of Washington state. From iconic coastal views of Giant’s Graveyard and the ever-eroding “Tree of Life” on Kalaloch beach to the burst of yellow of the Western Larch in the fall. From the foggy and rugged Olympic coast wilderness to the smoke filled valleys of the cascades during wildfire season. Boy can this place look great when it is not overcast (then too sometimes of course). Boy can this place provide some spectacular mountain views (or no views at all when socked in).

I find landscape photography to be somewhat confusing artistically. On one hand it can feel like there is no art or personality in it at all, “Just look! It is right there and capturing it with a camera can be so easy.” On the other hand I have an abundance of boring, cliche, and technically ruined (overexposed, missed focus, unsteady hands) failures not to mention trips where torrential rain and wind have kept my camera in the bag entirely. So is there skill in it? Absolutely. That said, much of the time the end product doesn’t really feel like it is my artwork and I have no pride or real emotional investment in the result… for all the superficial beauty my landscapes can just feel soulless.

In any case I do not feel that way about the pieces presented here. I like these ones. I keep coming back to these ones. I feel something when I look at them and I am interested if you do too.

Dan Jacobs INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5pm-8pm

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.’     Ferris Bueller

A Japanese theologian once wrote that he believed God moves at 3 miles an hour, which is the average speed of a human walking.  I believe that most of us miss out on a great deal of life because we are moving through our lives much faster than that. I have embraced walking as a way of effectively observing what may otherwise remain hidden from a casual glance.  My images reflect the different nuances, unique perspectives, and hidden surprises that are only evident while walking the neighborhoods and landscapes we more often crash through on the way to our assumed destinations. You may not remember these specific images down the road, but I hope they will inspire you to consider practicing your own version of life at 3 miles an hour. Dan Jacobs

Leon Lowman BUSINESS HOUR DISPLAY ONLY 1pm- 6:30pm. Artist will not be able to attend.

I was first introduced to painting with acrylics as a teenager, by my high school art teacher. At first I painted Caribbean land and seascapes while growing up in Puerto Rico. I then slowly began experimenting in abstracts and collage.

My focus is to create vibrant abstract compositions that reflect my past surroundings in the Caribbean – the contrast the strong sunlight creates, the open spaces, the freedom of the ocean breeze, and the joyous and spirited lifestyle that flows freely on the island. The challenge of creating an abstract composition that makes sense to the artist’s eye brings excitement to the process of painting. Painting allows me the freedom to borrow from my past, experiment in a meaningful context, and paint in a way that reflects the way I feel about the world today.

Leon Lowman received his B.A. in Art Education from Inter American University of Puerto Rico, and his M.A. in Painting from University of Northern Iowa. His work has been exhibited extensively in the Pacific Northwest. He has been featured nationally at places such as, San Diego Art Institute, Florida State University Gallery, and the Iowa State Exhibition, among many others. He was featured in the American Painters in Paris Exhibition.

STITCHED VILLAGE

In her show Stitched Village, Van Horne breathes new life into materials from the past through a process of deconstruction and reassembly. Vintage papers, photographs, fabrics & matchbooks are cut apart, layered, stitched, & fused together to form richly textured surfaces that echo the passage of time. Each piece, quilt-like in its construction, reveals visible stitches and raw edges—marks of both making & memory—woven into new narratives that honor & transform the remnants of what once was.
