Old Soul Flower Co.
“Flowers have been a part of my life forever, thanks to my mom who won a ribbon at the state fair for floral design when she was younger than I am now.
I am pushing 6 feet tall and learning to love my height. It especially comes in handy trying to forage for greens at my aunt’s or mom’s.
I believe in leaving my mark wherever I live. I just recently moved and left many plants in the ground that I had gotten as volunteers from my mom and auntie’s garden. Free plants!
One day I dream of having a big beautiful garden with lots of dogs running around. Something like a sanctuary with a cutting garden out front for anyone to help themselves because flowers cut directly from the garden last a whole lot longer than ones that have traveled for days.”

Note from West Seattle Grounds!

Blue Paintings
Once we received the “stay home” order from our wise governor, I decided to paint a blue painting every day, feeling a little blue myself — and feeling like “art in the time of corona” was a good way to process this bewildering time! These paintings (acrylic and pencil on paper) and their titles reflect this strange time — a body of work that expresses an idea each day.

Memories from the Mind’s Eye
When I started painting, I found myself drawn to styles, imagery and colors that surrounded me when growing up. My father assembled an eclectic gallery of contemporary art that included modern Japanese woodblock prints, abstract lithographs and detailed etchings. My mother made bedspreads of bold Marimekko prints for my brother and me. My family would visit museums around the boroughs of New York on Sundays. I’ve always been an appreciative aesthete.
It took time to give myself permission to paint. Now that it’s a practice, I love the act of expressing my visual inspiration as my own. It’s like I’m speaking a shared language, looking at the same landscape, drinking the same tea, and sharing space at the table as artists that came before me and work alongside me. Every day, I try new things, and from that, I grow.
About the Artist
I’ve been in the business of creating for many years, first as a graphic designer, then as a project and account manager of brand design. Being artistic has always been a given in my life, and being part of the creative process has always been very satisfying. At a career juncture in 2018, I joined the West Seattle Art Walk as a way to engage more deeply in my community. The experience has been transformative in so many ways. I have been inspired by the participating businesses and artists, their stories and their work. I’ve tapped into my own curiosity to paint and stepped past reluctance to go beyond my comfort zone. I’ve gained more confidence in self-expression. It is exciting to finally share my own vision with others!

Art of Kev
It’s a pleasure to meet you. I am Kevin Ducoing, or Kev. In my work, the curious relationship between our unconscious -tactile awareness of body, mind, and their position in the moment and in the world- is considered carefully, but with no light treatment. Large strokes, accidental textures, bold colors, and a sort of gritty underlayment are essential to my art. My tools are unapologetically primitive, helping me, and hopefully the observer, understand better the deeper driving parts of us of which we are not so familiar.
I invite you to enjoy my work. My hope is that it allows you a deeper view into the absurdity, and serendipitous
moments which define our lives, and a reason to laugh at it too.
If you see an original painting and would like a print of it instead, I have limited sets of giclée prints of most of my work available! I am also available for commission.
Cheers, Kevin Ducoing

Artist Statement:
“Originally a Boston-based architect / artist, I have ventured my way to Seattle to explore what everyone calls the “west coast vibes” in a continuation to indulge in my obsessive passion – illustrating the intriguing puzzles of the mind. Trained with the rigor mindset of one profession yet adapted to the abstract of another has created this fixation of intertwining mechanics and organics as reflected in many of my subject matters; there is always the interest of engaging the rigidity of one element that is typically man-made with the looseness of another that is part of our nature to create a composition where characteristics of both are shared and equalized. With a playful heart in mind, hopefully each piece can compel the viewers to question why?”

Makayla A.G.-Chronictopia Art
Hi! For 10+ years (in between life, school, occupations) I’ve been creating cannabis characters, canvases, portraits and more. I wish there were one word to describe my work, but it’s hard. I guess one way to say it is I’m one giant superimpose machine? For canvas I outline the shape of cannabis leaves, paint them, outline again, cut them out, then “paint” the back of each leaf with glue and apply them to a canvas in a layered manner. After that I take what ever image I have created, cut that out and paste atop the leaves. I have included photos of work that will be shown and past work-to give you an idea of what I do. The 4R’s & the snail are some of the ones that will be hung. Follow my Instagram or check out CannaWest Culture for the others I’ll have. Including, a hummingbird.

“Getting out of my head is a crucial first step in any creative endeavor. With Acrylic paint pouring there is a freedom and excitement … and no way to control the outcome. I love all things improv…singing, movement and art … even the art of conversation where one never knows the destination … I simply enjoy the journey.”

Sydney Davis: Innerscapes
Lately there has been so much uncertainty and stress in our lives. Over the last year, I’d been painting en plein air a lot when I traveled, but now travel has halted and I find myself more attracted to “innerscapes” instead of landscapes. My recent work is a reflection of turning inward and trying to embrace the new normal we find ourselves in with social distancing and working from home. While still inspired by nature, my work in early 2020 has been more abstract and reflective. Several pieces are abstracted versions of a micro-view of the insides of things, such as geodes or flowers, and others are an exaggerated macro-view, much like an aerial photograph of a beach or other landscape. I hope the viewer enjoys these new perspectives, and that these new viewpoints inspire a new perspective and calm in the viewer.

Brooke Borcherding
Deconstructed Landscapes in Acrylic
Brooke is a full-time, award-winning artist at age 32 working out of Capitol Hill Seattle WA. Her acrylic paintings focus on innovation, aesthetics, perception and place. With a background in plein air (on site) landscape painting, she has developed an affinity for color, dynamic composition, and the beauty of the every day. “Yes, some historians may consider the landscape a thing of the past, an art that ‘has already been done’. But I find it is never done, and forever something to be discovered in the moment. Graduating with a BFA in 2010 from the UofO, I have abstained from taking any further workshops and continue my practice of broken color, energetic mark making by constant observation and putting in the ‘brush miles’ of prolific output. I enjoy creating harmonious aesthetic works of art that cater to our human senses of universal beauty. Thus, I hope that my deconstructed style of painting that I’ve currenly landed on can stimulate these senses. The images in the virtual tour are all available for in person viewing at Caffe Ladro which is still open for to go coffee! Art in the Age of Covid-19
Garrison Coverdale:
I was a student at WSU when I got hooked on ceramics. We used a wood burning, very inefficient kiln that took hours to reach the relatively low temperature required for “RAKU” ware. I graduated and went on to graduate school at the University of Hawaii majoring in ceramics and sculpture. The Japanese fired in the “Raku” method back in the 16th century using lead based glazes on hand made pieces used in the tea ceremony. Removing the piece from the kiln while it is still very hot and placing it in a combustible such as dried leaves or straw which ignited caused the glaze to vary in ways that the traditional high fire did not. Earth, water, fire: All the elements come together to form unpredictable patterns so that each piece becomes a unique experience that couldn’t be duplicated even if I wanted to. Today there are a variety of “Raku” firing techniques. Copper is used in the glazes resulting in some very colorful reduced glazes. There is also “Horse hair” and the “crackle” glaze that I primarily use.

Linda McClamrock
Short Bio: I am a self taught collage artist living in West Seattle. I didn’t know until I was in my 50’s that I had any artistic skill, and making collages is my absolute favorite thing to do. I don’t draw any of my designs, but take my scissors and a stack of magazines and start cutting shapes. I never use the content of the magazine, only the colors and textures for my own content. I also teach collage workshops at C&P Coffee.

Wai Wong
Wai Wong Photo and Art
I am a late bloomer. I started to paint in June 2018 and I discovered that I love painting. Adding on to my interest in photography, my life has been enriched significantly. My inspirations come from my constant awareness of beauty wherever I am. A good day is taking my camera and go on an adventure, or spending unrestricted time on a painting. I believe that I am a dream-maker because whatever I had truly wanted in life I can manifest it, somehow, somewhere, and someday. I thrive on living meaningfully, creating art, inspiring others, and giving to my community.

Betty Zou
COVID19
Betty Zou is a Seattle artist who paints in watercolor, gouache, and dabbles in illustration. Her work is often inspired by the natural landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. She created these four pieces in the early weeks leading up to the COVID 19 stay home orders, at a time when she was experiencing a deep sense of loss and anger. The paintings in this series show our interconnectedness, our need for touch, and the rapidity of transmission.
Art Notes: The three large pieces are done on hot press watercolor paper, 12″ x 18″. The one smaller piece is on cold press water color paper, 9″ x 12″. All are painted with watercolor and charcoal.

Lizz Slabaugh
Onion Hands
Onion Hands emerged out of Lizz Slabaugh’s frustration with the state of the COVID-19 pandemic and our nation’s response. When Seattle businesses first started getting hit financially in March, Lizz was asked to create an advertisement for Swanson’s Shoe Repair using Michelangelo’s “Creation of Adam” art as inspiration. Unfortunately, the shop closed due to the stay-at-home order, and the ad creation halted. Regardless, the ideas continued to brew until Lizz could hold them in no longer. Lizz is just getting started and plans to continue Onion Hands as a fun and cathartic outlet.

Daniel Marin
Creating under the conceptual moniker Department M, Daniel Marin’s paintings bring together elements of pop, abstraction, street art, carpentry and décollage, depicting colorful and surreal moments in time. Marin sources imagery from magazines, comic books, newspapers and many other forms of media, blending features from each to craft the images in his work. Each piece is created using a layering approach made up of steps of silk-screening, freehand painting, hand cut stenciling and collage work, producing impactful compositions built on the artist’s patience and pleasure. A self-taught artist from Miami, FL, Marin’s work portrays engaging scenes with underlying stories and hints of both humor and tension, all left for the viewer to piece together.

Elena Naskova
Artist Statement
A line can depict a shape, a wiggle, a horizon, a mountain top, a wrinkle, a wave, a hair and what else? Add to it some color, and a whole world is born out of an empty space.
My work explores exactly that: the intricate dance of lines with colors to the music of inspiration. Every work of art is a birth of a new world with its own story, tension, drama and beauty. It’s a privilege to be an artist and witness the birth of these worlds, and experience first hand the stories they tell.

Barbara’s art has been called eclectic, evocative and powerful. Energy resonates her canvases and the colors vibrate among the shapes which hint of her work as an automotive designer. She embraces the world, as the world embraces her, and is influenced by culture, its struggles and its beauty.
Having called herself an artist since she was 5 years old, not until she moved into abstract art, after a career in the more realistic disciplines, did she feel her heart sing as she painted.

Vicki Basta
Bio/Statement
Vicki Basta is a Seattle based artist and photographer. Through close-up photography, she exposes the viewer to magnified details that are often missed in casual observation. Zooming in and capturing a section of a leaf or or an industrial object showes the viewer intricate veins, textures and colors. She is also intrigued by the similarities of natural and industrial objects when set by side, such as rusted red metal and red mossy tree bark. Her photography is recognized by textures, patterns and colors through themes of decay, new life and transformation in urban and natural settings, mirroring our own process of life and death. While out photographing, she gathers natural and found objects and blend them with paint or to stand alone to create mixed media shadow boxes and paintings. Vicki has been experimenting painting on tea bags and experimenting with textures through watercolor and eco-friendly paints.

Rohini Mathur
A native of New Delhi, India, Rohini Mathur is a self-taught oil painting artist who now lives and works in Bothell, Washington. She creates vibrant paintings of colorful florals, botanicals and gardens that pay homage to the immense wonders of Mother Nature.
About her purpose as an artist she explains, “I believe there is no better way to appreciate and be in reverence of the magnificent beauty of Mother Nature than capturing those through my playful brushstrokes on the canvas”. Inspired by this desire to express the beauty of the natural world, Rohini brings to life her paintings using her own distinctive style and interpretations rather than literal renderings.
Rohini’s style of painting is loose, abstract impressionistic as she attempts to capture the essence and mood of her subjects rather than a complete detailed mirror image. Bright and bold colors are her go-to palette and she paints in her favorite medium, Oils.
Rohini is an award-winning artist whose art has been juried into several art exhibitions and shows in Washington and Oregon. In 2019, her paintings were honored with City of Kent Purchase Awards in the City of Kent Summer Art Exhibition and included in the City’s Public Art Collection. Tara McDermott
Forest Portal
In 2019 I began weekly treks to the wild places in Washington state. Every Saturday I would search out solitude looking for and finding out of the way trails. The more remote the better. In these weekly adventures, I would take hundreds of images on my digital camera, so small and lightweight compared to my normal 5-pound film camera. I went snap-happy, taking tons of photos of details and vistas, things that gave me joy and delight. I began sharing my experiences online and was overwhelmed with how much they resonated with people. Everyone loves the outdoors, though not everyone has the ability to do so, due to time, commitments, or ability. At the end of the year I had an idea for making art out of the treasure trove of images I had compiled. These pieces are the result.
These are prints from my cellphone camera, mounted to circular panels, with encaustic and india ink applied. Razor blades provide a way to scrape and make marks for the ink, drawing if you will, and steel wool is used to burnish the surface and remove excess amounts of ink. I call these portals because they provide a glimpse into what I love most about nature.
Artist Note! I’m a photographic-based artist that lives in Alki. Quite a few of my artworks include images taken in West Seattle. If you’ve ever seen a woman walking around the neighborhood with a weird looking camera dangling from her wrist, that was probably me!

Deb McCarroll
Deb McCarroll’s bold work embodies the Northwest’s regional culture. Patterns are created with Seattle’s ubiquitous falling rain. Paper is integrated into wet paint and then set on fire. Metal leafs are frequently woven into scenes and selectively oxidized with acid to add patinas in glittering greens and browns. Local flora and fauna are painted in startling realism and then pared with raw abstract practices.
McCarroll’s work is featured in numerous private collections, including 5 paintings in the Seattle Paramount Hotel permanent collection. She was feature cover artist in Still Point Quarterly’s 2018 Four Freedoms limited edition book. She was cover artist for 2015 Stone Voices arts magazine and she was awarded ‘Best Painting’ in the Still Point Art Gallery’s juried competition, Earth Water Fire Air: Our World. And this year she was awarded the Special Merit prize in Light, Space and Time gallery’s Figurative competition.
“Trained in graphic design, I juxtapose clean, detailed forms with raw, textured backgrounds. I am inspired by artists like Jasper Johns, Rothko, Frankenthaler and while my work can be figurative, its beating heart is abstract.” – Deb McCarroll

Katie Wilson
With these pieces I invite you wander a golden moonscape, count tree rings, follow a stranger through a forest, and remember the strength of your roots.
I strive to make art that balances beauty and unease. I delight in imagining what may be hidden below the ground or lurking under the water’s surface. My work is inspired by a childhood spent wandering the beaches and woods of nearby Vashon Island and I have a deep love of nature that leaks into all my art. I currently live in West Seattle with my family and our aloof cat.
