Additionally This Month: The Art of Music!

The upcoming November 10th West Seattle Art Walk will feature Art of Music with events in the Admiral, Alaska Junction and Morgan Junction! Stroll from Admiral to Morgan to catch all the music.

November 10 – Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Sarah Brunner @ West Seattle Grounds. Having played 1,000 shows between 2016 and 2021, and covering everything from Johnny Cash to Sheryl Crow to The Weeknd, Sarah uses rhythm guitar as much as a vocal melody to define a song. Her band The Hipocrats is recording their debut EP due June 2021. View her music video for “Caravan” here. Find her also on Facebook and Instagram.    Click here for Sarah Brunner’s flyer.

November 10 – Prolific singer/songwriter and self-taught guitarist Kristen Marlo @ John L. Scott Real Estate. Her broad appeal is reflected in the eclectic list of internationally known American artists she’s opened for, including Sara Bareilles, Joshua Radin, Todd Snider, country artist Eric Church, and others. Kristin is a US Air Force Veteran and her inspiration comes from her passion for new experiences and exploring the full range of human emotion. You can check out her second LP titled “I Think You’re Swell” here.    Click here for Kristen Marlo’s flyer

November 10 – Genre-blender extraordinaire Joshua Dennis at the Beveridge Place Pub. Boasting an early start, Joshua has been writing and performing since he was 16 years old. Over the years he has performed as a solo artist and band frontman for Westerly and Modern Relics. Taking cues from folk to country and pop to soul – Joshua’s songs seem at once familiar and new. He is featured on many compilations and even on TV, and has opened for acts such as Brandi Carlile, Jackie Greene, and Sister Hazel. You can listen to samples of Joshua playing here. Click here for Joshua Dennis’s flyer

Each musician will be performing family-friendly content for 90 minutes at their Art of Music event, from 6:00 pm to 7:45 pm, with one 15-minute break at the midway point.

Stephanie Scott is an abstract oil painter living and working in Seattle, WA. “Golden Threads” is a geometric show made of symbolic color and hard edged shapes with gold leaf accents. Lately, my work has been focusing on the trees in our neighborhood, and how trees –even a single tree– transforms a neighborhood into something quite different. Urban trees buffer mechanical noise, make shade and homes for a wide variety of animals, and interact with wind to  make almost imperceptible sounds that are conducive to comfort and introspective thought. Attempting to capture this aesthetic in my art is a continuing adventure. I invite you to enjoy my work!

Billy Ball INDOORS AND RECEPTION 5pm – 8pm

Just a dude with a camera. My underwater photography began while working as a dive guide and instructor on the Big Island of Hawaii. After a flood of my compact camera housing I made the jump to a DSLR system. With a few mentors and a ton of online research I began to develop my style. Beginning with a trip to Bali, I realized my love of shooting macro critters. I am able to draw
on my experience as a dive guide/spotter to help me find my subjects. Over time my interests have expanded into CFWA and large animals. My passion for teaching people to dive has evolved into a passion to teach underwater photography. I believe very strong fundamental diving skills go hand in hand with photography. By working on both types of skills simultaneously my students are able to evolve their photography rapidly and reduce their impact on the underwater world.

Earth to Metal

“Earth to Metal and Metal to Water” West to North to East -earth decays and turns to metal, which condensates and releases water
This series of works is exploring the relationship between earth and water elements in Feng Shui teachings. Since I am interpreting Feng Shui from a painter’s point of view, my application is abstract and personal. Feng Shui principle: The element earth (west, square, sand) turns to metal (north, circle, black, blue). Metal condensates and springs water (blue, waves, rectangle).

Leslie Nan Moon INDOORS+RECEPTION, 12pm-8pm

In my most recent work I am primarily using the technique known as “jigsaw puzzle linocuts”.  “In this method I first draw and then carve my design into a piece of linoleum.  After I have finished carving I cut up the block and then ink up each piece individually in different colors. Next I put the block back together (like a puzzle) before laying the paper down on the block and pulling a print. Ink must be reapplied by hand to the linoleum for each original print I create.”

Deb McCarroll’s bold work embodies the Northwest’s regional culture. Patterns are created with Seattle’s ubiquitous falling rain. Paper is integrated into wet paint and then set on fire. Metal leaf is frequently woven into scenes and selectively oxidized with acid to add patinas in glittering greens and browns. Local flora and fauna are painted in startling realism and then pared with raw abstract practices.

The Shifter Scrolls: Inked Hiking

These works are from an ongoing series I call the “Shifter Scrolls” (my nickname is Shifter). The concept for this comes in part from my fascination with long linear Chinese, Japanese, and Indian scrolls that tell tales from the important to the mundane. These longer drawings are based on 8 days of hiking in Glacier National Park in 2021. The 30 foot drawing is a depiction of this journey in linear time, from day 1 to day 8. The other 25 foot work is a assemblage of drawings from the same adventure. The diptychs are a collection of work from hiking in the Mt. Baker area a couple weeks ago. They combine photography of the location alongside an ink drawing of said location. This series is a physical manifestation of the emotions and feelings experienced from being in nature, in exercerting energy and becoming weary and high on endorphins on my hiking journeys. The ability to become one with nature, to cease to exist, to feel that the world is limitless, and that existence is infinite. The act of making art equally transits my existence to another plane. It’s sort of some out of body experience. I’m fascinated at the interior depths you can wander in while in the mountains and the forest. I’m equally intrigued by the depths you can travel to within yourself while creating art. This work happily combines the two. Both the drawing and the hiking at times produce an incredible feeling of possibility. CONTACT: nickshiflet@gmail.com

Leah Nadeau INDOOR SHOW+RECEPTION 5pm-8pm

Leah Nadeau is a  Detroit-born contemporary fine artist living in the Seattle Metropolitan area. Nadeau’s vibrant artworks combine geometric abstraction, energetic color stories, loose brushstrokes, and clean linework. Her work is inspired by travel, architecture, her film studies, and time periods in culture and design such as the German Expressionist Movement, the Art Deco Movement, and the Mid-Century Modern Era. In 2006, Nadeau’s travels prompted her to purchase a sketchbook for the first time, beginning a transformative journey into art. In these early moments of her career, Nadeau’s skills for discernment and visual memory became finely tuned, utilizing industry, architecture, and design influences to sketch. Realizing that not every person is drawn to the same specific visual stimuli, she began incorporating these distinctions into her work– commentary on the imagery we consume. Her education as a film student gives her a unique perspective: the ability to view the world from the outside in, as if watching characters interact in the storyscapes she creates with paint. Years of painting have only clarified this vision. Known for bright, saturated colors, highly textured paintings, linework, and vivid shapes, Nadeau’s work challenges the ways we see and interpret the world. Nadeau’s paintings “Electric Circus” 1 & 2 were purchased by Henry Ford Health and are on permanent display at the Detroit located Cancer Institute. Neighboring works in the same building include original artworks by Vincent Van Gogh, and Henri Matisse.

Naomi Jean Cooper INDOORS SHOW & RECEPTION 5pm-7pm

Naomi Jean Cooper, Intuitive Artist

WHY I CREATE: a way of being. Creating helps me connect to the infinite creative flow, deepen into compassion, and dwell in the moment. When I found myself on a journey through severe depression, one that stripped away false narratives about who I was supposed to be, creating art helped me find and love my authentic self. This has become a way of being for me.

WHAT I CREATE: explorations and invitations’ My art is an exploration of the natural cycles of creation and destruction that are found in our bodies, in the world around us, and throughout the cosmos. My art is a reflection of my experience when I create. It is art that invites us to be here now.

HOW I CREATE: play and somatic intuition’ I create from a place of play and somatic intuition. It is a practice of listening to, honoring, and trusting the physical sensations in my body. When I create, I deepen into experiencing the infinite, creative, compassionate energy that is both within me and beyond me.

MY TOOLS: pencil, paint, and pixels. I love the strong mind/body connection that comes with using a pencil, a tool I’ve been using to create as long as I can remember. I love the endless, thrilling possibilities of creating with acrylic paint. I love digital alchemy possibilities with pixels in Adobe Photoshop. I might use just one or all of these tools in a single piece of artwork. How they might come together is all part of the play.

WHERE I CREATE: my art studio. My art studio space is a beautiful and important place to create. It can be quite meditative and solitary, which is exactly what I need — some of the time.

WHERE I CREATE: live music performances.  It is inspiring and invigorating for me to draw during live music performances. These spaces are buzzing with people creating and receiving vital energy, and I love to draw while participating in that exchange. The local music community in Seattle, WA USA where I live is astonishingly beautiful, and I’m grateful for the warm welcome and appreciation I receive when I show up at venues with my pencils and and paper. Of course, sometimes I have to put it all down and just dance!

Thanks for your interest in my art! – Naomi Jean Cooper

Olivia Michala is the creator behind @CosmicMooJuice. Working with an array of mediums ranging from digital, stickers, ceramic, and most recently, acrylic and totes. Cosmic Moo Juice delivers all the feels of a dark but light-hearted comedy directed by a young Black woman with American-Nigerian-British roots who moved around a lot as a child. She believes home is wherever
feels special to you during that time. Exploring Cosmic Moo Juice is like walking into different colorful rooms in a 20 room palace. The moods change and so does the scenery.

Evan Schoenfeld INDOOR SHOW 5:30pm-8pm

I was born in Seattle in 1958. By my teens I had acquired some drawing and painting skills through independent study, then neglected visual arts until around 2000. The discovery of alpine scenery in the Cascades had a profound effect. “By Jove,” I said, “Somebody needs to paint these.” Since retiring in 2013 I have spent 40 delightful hours in the atelier a week, completing three oils in an average year. Besides mountain environments, my favorite influences are Leonardo, Vermeer, Odilon Redon. Pet peeves: Global warming.

CLOSED TONIGHT FOR ILLNESS (NOT COVID!)

Kevin Ducoing INDOORS + RECEPTION 5pm-8pm

Lately, my work has been focusing on the trees in our neighborhood, and how trees –even a single tree– transforms a neighborhood into something quite different. Urban trees buffer mechanical noise, make shade and homes for a wide variety of animals, and interact with wind to  make almost imperceptible sounds that are conducive to comfort and introspective thought. Attempting to capture this aesthetic in my art is a continuing adventure. I invite you to enjoy my work!

Enjoy this month’s Art of Music during the Art Walk!

Flora Carlile-Kovacs: Flora Felts Handmade Textiles

My interest in textiles drew me to graduate studies in ethnography, but I felt a deeper passion for creating with fiber than analyzing it. I have learned several traditional fiber arts from the greatest masters in Hungary. When I’ve learned the basics of the felting technique, I realized this is a limitless medium with amazing possibilities. In my work I use the most ancient textile technique, combining carded, unspun wool and silk fibers with water, soap and vigorous kneading to create a durable, unwoven material: felt. I have improved the traditional techniques and invented new ones of my own. Breaking away from making useful objects I am now exploring how handmade felt can become applied art for public spaces. I use several layers of hand-dyed merino wool and silk fibers and fabrics to create optical color blending. I incorporate various materials in the felt to achieve captivating textures and surfaces. I often create raised surfaces so the light refracts on the ruffles of silk and synthetic fabrics. Handmade felt is underestimated and underrepresented in the art world. My mission is to find its audience and to break the boundary between craft and fine art.
