The Art Walk this month will be on Thursday, December 8 from 5-8pm (check venues for specific times).
It’s that time of year when we start enjoying the winter holidays and showing our love for friends and family by sharing laughter, celebration and gift giving. Dress warmly and come out to the Ave (the real Ave. Not that wanna-be Ave in the U district) to join with your neighbors to hear the caroling by the Silver Belles acapella women’s singing group at the Junction and see the holiday lights. Enjoy an evening of art, food and drink and we’re sure you will find some special something for a loved one. Come by our wonderful sponsoring eateries for food and drink to warm you up for the winter walk in our neighborhood.
Art will be on display at 36 participating businesses and you can enjoy a wide variety of “Art Walk Specials” at 15 bars, restaurants and cafes (Check out our Facebook post for more info). So grab a Walking Map at any of the participating businesses below to plan your route!

SHE ANSWERED THE CALL OF THE WILD!
Brittany Noelle is the founding/principal artist of PNW Orca Pod Squad Photography. Raised in the green mountains of Vermont, her love of nature began as a child while exploring the wilds of Acadia National Park in Maine. After witnessing their breaching in the Salish Sea her love of whales was solidified. Now a whale enthusiast and conservation activist, when not focused on the challenges of Harborview Medical Center’s Emergency Department, she spends countless hours along the west coast documenting these majestic creatures. You can usually find her with her camera on land or a boat along the shores of the Pacific, venturing to the San Juan Islands or Vancouver Island. As a wildlife photographer, naturalist and conservation advocate she enjoys connecting people with her local ecosystem and the animals that call the Salish Sea and the Pacific Northwest home. In 2022, 5% of all sales will be donated to Killer Whale Tales, a local non-profit, environmental education program that uses storytelling and field based science to inspire students to take an active role in conservation of Southern Resident killer whales and their environment.

Colors, shapes, and flowing lines create me anew every day as they open my soul into new awarenesses. Dancing lines and curves flow creating sounds and rhythms of life pulled into physical form by songs inside me. Strong and bold colors are the blood coursing through my life. I feel that all nature, animals, abstract figures and conditions carry music within them. These sources both contain and release freedom and infinity. As I tap these resources, the art and music through which my life unfolds reveals conditions I had not experienced before, and through which I am now able to express my life.
Artist Diego Fidelis lives in Washington State, in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, where nature is so inspiring. Art and music have always stirred in his blood since he can remember. As a child, he drew on a big bright blue formica table that his family had in the kitchen in Brazil. He filled this table with his drawings every day. The table was cleaned by his mom every night, ensuring he would always have a blank canvas for the next day to let his creativity flow in the child’s universe: imagination, freedom and infinity. This must be the reason his favorite color is blue after looking at this table for many years! As a self-taught musician he remembers that even as a young kid he appreciated and paid attention to the sounds, rhythms and melodies in a song. Although this sensitivity for music had been present in his early life, later as a teen he played his first instrument: drums. After that he expanded into one of the most complex and warm, rich sounds: the piano, learning to play by ear. As an adult, he took cello lessons for a few years. He graduated from College in Advertising and has worked for advertising agencies in their art departments in the past. Around 2016, he discovered in paintings a similar passion as he had found in music. He now finds freedom exploring his new creations: Music helps him find inspiration for his art and his paintings inspire his music. They knit visual and non-visual worlds into connectivity, revealing new frontiers.

Kevin Ducoing INDOORS + RECEPTION 5pm-8pm
Lately, my work has been focusing on the trees in our neighborhood, and how trees –even a single tree– transforms a neighborhood into something quite different. Urban trees buffer mechanical noise, make shade and homes for a wide variety of animals, and interact with wind to make almost imperceptible sounds that are conducive to comfort and introspective thought. Attempting to capture this aesthetic in my art is a continuing adventure. I invite you to enjoy my work!

Flora Carlile-Kovacs: Flora Felts Handmade Textiles
My interest in textiles drew me to graduate studies in ethnography, but I felt a deeper passion for creating with fiber than analyzing it. I have learned several traditional fiber arts from the greatest masters in Hungary. When I’ve learned the basics of the felting technique, I realized this is a limitless medium with amazing possibilities. In my work I use the most ancient textile technique, combining carded, unspun wool and silk fibers with water, soap and vigorous kneading to create a durable, unwoven material: felt. I have improved the traditional techniques and invented new ones of my own. Breaking away from making useful objects I am now exploring how handmade felt can become applied art for public spaces. I use several layers of hand-dyed merino wool and silk fibers and fabrics to create optical color blending. I incorporate various materials in the felt to achieve captivating textures and surfaces. I often create raised surfaces so the light refracts on the ruffles of silk and synthetic fabrics. Handmade felt is underestimated and underrepresented in the art world. My mission is to find its audience and to break the boundary between craft and fine art.
