Business Spotlight: John L. Scott West Seattle

By Reeve Washburn, Art Walk Coordinator

At John L. Scott West Seattle, innovation means being human, making meaningful connections with clients and with brokers. Tyler McKenzie, designated broker and owner, with his partner and wife Marguerite Carlson, know that shelter, along with food and safety, is a basic human need. But they also know how shelter becomes a more meaningful place when it grows from relationships that strengthen a community and nurture dreams. It’s part of what sets their business apart, as they live that mission every day with their team and clients.

“Service pride is integral to the community.” Tyler McKenzie, designated broker and owner, John L. Scott West Seattle

Living Life as a Contributor

As independent franchise owners, Tyler and Marguerite fully embrace the concept of giving of themselves for the benefit of their community. This aspirational approach is imbued in all they do, and is perfectly aligned with the culture of the larger organization. John L. Scott is approaching its 89th year of business in the Seattle area, and they value the daily opportunity to continue the organization’s legacy via their professional experience:

  • Tyler is a recognized realtor industry leader – educator, mediator, ombudsman, mentor – ensuring the best-quality standards for professionals in real estate. As designated broker, he is responsible for the supervision of their broker team as the day-to-day face of the organization.
  • Marguerite was a Senior Housing Developer and Strategic Advisor, having worked with the Seattle Housing Authority for 13 years. She emphasizes the power of collaboration within the office and brings big-picture industry knowledge.

Their hands-on mentorship and guidance of the broker team is what ensures their clients’ satisfaction and successful transactions. They are equally proud of their business’s standing in the community as being excellent advocates for property rights, and their repeat customers.

“Real estate, at its core, is about buying and selling – but it’s a significant milestone in so many peoples’ lives that especially benefits from caring oversight, experience, and professionalism.” Marguerite Carlson, Executive Vice President, Owner & Broker, John L. Scott West Seattle

The Art is in the Details

Tyler’s energy matches the art that graces the office walls. He grew up in an artistic family, with a father who was a landscape and portrait painter and gallerist in Los Angeles. He showcases several of his father’s works in the office to support the space, and enjoys the variety of art chosen to display each month as part of the West Seattle Art Walk. John L. Scott has been an Art Walk participant since 2016, and is now an Art Walk partner. They support emerging and established artists alike – many of whom are also West Seattle residents – and take no commissions.

Tyler and Marguerite think that Art Walk complements their business concept by giving their brokers a different, unique way to be of service to the community. Individual brokers are responsible for selecting artists and planning each month’s exhibit, supported by office administrator Loyd Watson. The receptions are a relaxed environment to meet fellow art lovers and develop relationships with face-to-face conversations. Editor’s note: The Art Walk receptions are more like elegant parties, with wine, a full spread of quality nibbles, and occasionally live music.

Making Special Moments Happen

Tyler and Marguerite want to people to see their business as more than just real estate, and like the challenge of upping their game in West Seattle, year-round! In December, they host the West Seattle Santa gathering, and cook a holiday pancake breakfast upstairs for the kids. They host West Seattle Wine Walks, and were a first-time sponsor of the West Seattle Grand Parade in this past summer. They invite everyone to come say hello at Art Walk this Thursday, August 8, for an exhibit of Karen Dedrickson’s contemporary Sumi-e style ink paintings.
